Vans are worth more than cars because they weigh more and carry more reusable parts, so a long-wheelbase Transit or Sprinter normally beats a family car of the same age. Every light commercial up to 3.5 tonnes is bought, running or not. Key facts: - Typical payment: 200 - 600 GBP by bank transfer - Vehicles bought: Panel vans, tippers, dropsides, Lutons, pickups, crew cabs, minibuses up to 3.5t - Condition: Non-runners, seized engines, accident and fire damage all bought - Collection: Free, anywhere in Scotland, usually 1-3 working days - Fleet clearances: Multi-vehicle runs on one transporter with a single payment - Paperwork: Certificate of Destruction issued, DVLA notified by us Vans are usually worth more than cars for the simple reason that they weigh more. A long-wheelbase Transit carries roughly twice the steel of a supermini, and commercial vehicles are far more likely to have reusable running gear still on them when they come off the road. We buy every light commercial: panel vans, tippers, dropsides, Lutons, crew cabs, pickups and minibuses, running or not, MOT'd or not, insurance write-off or worn out. #### What we take If it has a chassis and a VIN we will quote for it. There is no commercial surcharge and no charge for a van that has been standing for years. - Panel vans - Transit, Transit Custom, Vivaro, Trafic, Sprinter, Crafter, Boxer, Ducato, Berlingo, Combo, Caddy - Tippers, dropsides and Luton box vans, including ones with the body removed - Pickups and crew cabs - Hilux, Navara, L200, Ranger, Amarok - Minibuses and welfare vans up to 3.5 tonnes - Ex-fleet and ex-lease vehicles with the signwriting still on - Non-runners, seized engines, blown gearboxes, accident damage and fire damage #### Why van prices are higher Three things push a van above the equivalent car. It is heavier, so the shell alone is worth more. It usually carries a larger catalytic converter or DPF. And commercial parts hold their value: doors, tailgates, axles, gearboxes and injectors from a common Transit or Sprinter are in constant demand. That is also why we ask whether the vehicle is complete. A van missing its cat, wheels or engine is still worth buying, but the quote reflects it. #### Fleet and multi-vehicle collections If you are clearing more than one vehicle we will schedule a single transporter run rather than separate visits, which usually means a faster turnaround and one consolidated payment. Builders' yards, plant hire firms, councils and lease companies all use us this way. Tell us the number of vehicles, the site access and whether anything needs winching and we will plan the right vehicle for the job. #### Paperwork on a commercial vehicle It is the same as a car with one addition: if the van is still on a finance or lease agreement, that has to be settled before it can be scrapped. We check the registration and will tell you if anything is outstanding. You get a Certificate of Destruction from our SEPA licensed facility and the DVLA record is closed, which stops any further tax, insurance or penalty liability landing on your business. #### Typical light commercial weights - the main driver of scrap value | Vehicle | Examples | Kerb weight (approx) | | --- | --- | --- | | Small van | Berlingo, Combo, Caddy, Kangoo | 1,200 - 1,450 kg | | Mid-size panel van | Transit Custom, Vivaro, Trafic | 1,700 - 2,000 kg | | Large panel van | Transit LWB, Sprinter, Crafter, Boxer | 2,000 - 2,400 kg | | Tipper / dropside | Transit tipper, Iveco Daily | 2,100 - 2,600 kg | | Pickup / crew cab | Hilux, Navara, L200, Ranger | 1,850 - 2,300 kg | #### Questions about scrap a van **Do you pay more for a van than a car?** Usually yes. Vans are heavier and carry more reusable parts, and both feed directly into the price. A large panel van will normally beat a family car of the same age and condition. **Will you collect a van that has not moved in years?** Yes. Flat tyres, seized brakes, no battery and no keys are all normal for us. Tell us when you book so the driver brings winching equipment. **Can you collect several vans at once?** Yes. Multi-vehicle collections are scheduled on one transporter run with a single consolidated payment. We regularly clear builders' yards and ex-fleet sites. **My van still has the company signwriting on it. Is that a problem?** No. The vehicle is destroyed at our facility, so the livery goes with it. If you would rather remove it first that is entirely up to you. **The van is still on finance. Can I scrap it?** Not until the agreement is settled - the finance company remains the legal owner. Clear the balance first, then we can proceed as normal. **Do I need to remove signwriting or vinyl wrap before collection?** No. Livery, vinyl and roof racks make no difference to the scrap value and we remove and destroy branded panels as part of processing, so your business name never ends up back on the road. **Can you scrap a van that is still on a lease or finance agreement?** Not while finance is registered against it. Settle the agreement or get written release from the finance company, then we can buy it in the normal way. **Do you buy Luton and box vans with a tail lift?** Yes, and they usually price well because of the extra steel and the recoverable tail lift hydraulics. Give us the body type on the call so the right transporter is sent. Scrap A Car Scotland typically pays 130 to 400 GBP for a car and 200 to 600 GBP for a van, paid by bank transfer on the day of collection, with free collection and no admin, paperwork or collection deductions. Key facts: - Typical car payment: 130 - 400 GBP by bank transfer - Typical van payment: 200 - 600 GBP by bank transfer - Main price driver: Kerb weight, then scrap steel price and reusable parts - Collection cost: Free, anywhere in Scotland - Deductions: None. The quoted price is the price paid - Cash payments: Illegal in the UK since the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013 Anyone who quotes a flat figure for a scrap car before asking what it is has either guessed or plans to change the number when the transporter arrives. A real quote is built from a handful of inputs, and once you know them you can judge any offer you are given. #### The four things that set the price - Weight - the shell is steel, aluminium and copper. Heavier vehicles start higher, which is why 4x4s and vans beat superminis. - Current scrap metal prices - these move weekly on world markets, which is why a genuine quote carries an expiry date. - Reusable parts - engine, gearbox, alternator, doors, lights, and especially the catalytic converter or DPF. - Completeness and condition - a stripped shell, a missing cat or a fire-damaged car is worth less than a complete MOT failure. #### Where the car is Our depot is in Thornton, Fife, and Fife, the Central Belt, the Lothians and Tayside are daily runs for our transporters. Further out - Highland, Argyll, Dumfries and Galloway - the collection window is longer, but collection stays free. #### What should never come off your price There is no legitimate admin fee, paperwork fee, DVLA notification fee or collection fee on a scrap car in Scotland. If a buyer's price drops on the driveway for a fault you already declared, you are entitled to refuse and send them away. The figure we quote is the figure paid by bank transfer at collection, and we do not pay cash - cash payment for scrap metal has been illegal in Scotland since the Air Weapons and Licensing (Scotland) Act 2015. #### How to get the strongest quote Be accurate. Tell us the registration, whether it runs, whether anything has been removed and where it is parked. An accurate description means the quote holds. A vague one means the price gets revised on the day, which nobody wants. #### Vehicle types and what typically drives their value | Vehicle type | Examples | What drives the price | | --- | --- | --- | | Small hatchback | Corsa, Fiesta, Polo, Aygo | Lightest shells - value comes mostly from reusable parts | | Family saloon / estate | Focus, Astra, Golf, Mondeo | The most common vehicle we buy; steady mid-range weight | | 4x4 and SUV | Qashqai, Freelander, X-Trail, Discovery | Heavy shells plus large catalysts - usually the strongest prices | | Van and light commercial | Transit, Vivaro, Sprinter | Weight plus high demand for reusable commercial parts | | MOT failure or non-runner | Any make, any age | No deduction for not starting or not being roadworthy | | Stripped or incomplete | Missing cat, engine or wheels | Priced on remaining weight only | #### Questions about scrap prices **How much is my scrap car worth?** It depends on weight, current metal prices, what parts are reusable and the vehicle's condition. Give us the registration and an honest description and we will give you a firm figure that holds to collection. **Why do quotes have an expiry date?** Scrap metal prices move week to week on world markets. A quote with no time limit is either padded or will be revised later. **Do you pay cash for scrap cars?** No, and nobody legally can in Scotland. Cash payment for scrap metal was banned under the Air Weapons and Licensing (Scotland) Act 2015. We pay by bank transfer on collection. **Are there any fees taken off the price?** None. No admin fee, no paperwork fee, no collection charge. The quoted figure is the figure that lands in your account. **Does a car with no MOT or a failed MOT get less?** No. We buy end-of-life vehicles, so MOT status makes no difference to the price. A car that fails on structural corrosion is still bought on weight and parts. **Is my car worth more if it still runs?** Sometimes marginally, because more components are provably good, but it is a smaller factor than weight. We collect runners and non-runners alike at no charge. **Why do two identical cars get different prices?** Condition and completeness. A car with its catalytic converter, battery, alloys and undamaged panels intact carries recoverable parts value on top of the weight, so it beats an identical shell that has been stripped. **Do scrap prices change through the year?** Yes. Scrap steel is a traded commodity and the price moves weekly, so quotes are held for seven days rather than indefinitely. Last reviewed: 2026-07-01 ### Certificate of Destruction (CoD) - What It Is and Why It Matters URL: https://scrapacarscotland.com/certificate-of-destruction A Certificate of Destruction (CoD) is the DVLA-recognised document proving a vehicle has been permanently destroyed at an Authorised Treatment Facility. Only an ATF can issue one, and Scrap A Car Scotland is SEPA licensed, so every vehicle it scraps gets a CoD at no cost. Once the CoD is issued the DVLA record is closed and all tax, insurance and penalty liability ends. Key facts: - What it is: DVLA-recognised proof a vehicle has been permanently destroyed - Who can issue one: Only a licensed Authorised Treatment Facility (ATF) - Cost: Free with every vehicle scrapped by Scrap A Car Scotland - When you get it: Issued after destruction, normally within 7 days - Legal effect: Ends road tax, insurance and penalty liability for the keeper - DVLA notification: Handled by Scrap A Car Scotland, not the keeper The Certificate of Destruction is the most important piece of paper in the whole process, and the one most people have never heard of until something goes wrong months later. #### What a CoD actually proves It confirms the vehicle was destroyed at an Authorised Treatment Facility and its record has been closed with the DVLA. From that moment the car cannot legally be driven, taxed, insured or sold on, and you stop being the registered keeper. That is your protection against everything that can otherwise follow a car you thought was gone: parking charge notices, speeding penalties, fly-tipping fines and continuous insurance enforcement letters. #### Who is allowed to issue one Only a SEPA licensed Authorised Treatment Facility can issue a CoD in Scotland. A man with a trailer and an envelope of cash cannot, whatever he tells you. Our SEPA waste carrier licence number is WCR/R/1137358. Ask any buyer for theirs before the vehicle is loaded, and walk away if they cannot give one. #### When you should receive it The ATF has seven days from destruction to notify the DVLA, and the certificate is normally issued electronically inside that window. You should also get a separate DVLA acknowledgement letter confirming the record is closed. If nothing has arrived after four weeks, chase it. #### What to do on collection day Hand over the full V5C log book and keep the yellow V5C/3 section for your own records. Check the paperwork names a licensed ATF and lists your registration correctly. Photograph the car on the transporter alongside the collection note - it takes ten seconds and settles any dispute. #### What happens if you scrap without one The DVLA still shows you as the keeper. Any fine, charge or offence attached to that registration comes to your address, and you carry the burden of proving the car was gone. Vehicles taken without paperwork also turn up fly-tipped, at which point the local authority traces the last registered keeper - you. #### Questions about certificate of destruction **Is a Certificate of Destruction free?** Yes. It is issued at no cost with every vehicle we collect. Any buyer charging for a CoD is charging for something that should never be billed. **How long does a Certificate of Destruction take?** The ATF must notify the DVLA within seven days of destruction, and the certificate is typically issued electronically in that window. Chase it if you have heard nothing after four weeks. **Can I get a CoD if I have lost the V5C?** Yes. The certificate is issued by the treatment facility, not the DVLA record you hold. Bring whatever proof of ownership you have and write to the DVLA separately to confirm the vehicle has been scrapped. **Does a CoD mean I get my road tax refunded?** Once the DVLA record is closed, any full remaining months of tax are refunded automatically and the direct debit is cancelled. **Can a car with a CoD ever be put back on the road?** No. A CoD is final - the vehicle identity is destroyed with the car. That is what separates it from a salvage or write-off category that can be repaired. **How long does the Certificate of Destruction take to arrive?** The DVLA notification goes in the same day the vehicle is processed, and the certificate is normally issued within a few working days. You will also get written confirmation from the DVLA. **What should I do if I lose my Certificate of Destruction?** Call us with the registration and collection date and we will reissue a copy from our Authorised Treatment Facility records. The DVLA record of destruction is permanent regardless. **Does a Certificate of Destruction cancel my insurance?** No. It ends your DVLA liability for the vehicle, but you still need to contact your insurer yourself to cancel the policy and claim any refund. Last reviewed: 2026-07-01 ### Scrap My Motorhome or Campervan in Scotland URL: https://scrapacarscotland.com/scrap-my-motorhome Scrap A Car Scotland buys motorhomes, campervans and converted panel vans anywhere in Scotland, running or not, and pays 300 to 1,200 GBP by bank transfer on the day of collection. Motorhomes are worth more than cars because of their weight and the reusable chassis, engine and appliances, and Scrap A Car Scotland collects them free using a low-loader sized for the vehicle. Key facts: - Typical payment: 300 - 1,200 GBP by bank transfer - Vehicles bought: Coachbuilt motorhomes, A-class, panel van conversions, campervans - Condition: Non-runners, water damage, delamination and failed habitation checks all bought - Collection: Free, anywhere in Scotland, low-loader supplied - Coverage: All of Scotland from the Thornton, Fife depot - Paperwork: Certificate of Destruction issued, DVLA notified by us Motorhomes are awkward to dispose of. They are too big for a domestic skip, too damaged to sell, and most scrap yards do not have the equipment to move a seven-metre coachbuilt off a driveway. We do. Water ingress is what finishes most of them. Once damp has reached the floor and walls, the repair bill routinely exceeds the vehicle's value, and the honest answer is to weigh it in and recover what the chassis and running gear are worth. #### What we collect - Coachbuilt motorhomes on Fiat Ducato, Transit, Boxer, Sprinter and Mercedes chassis - Panel van conversions and campervans, including self-builds - A-class motorhomes and older American RVs (tell us the length and weight when you book) - Touring caravans and static units where access allows - Water-damaged, delaminated, storm-damaged and fire-damaged units - Non-runners, seized engines and vehicles that have been standing for years #### Why motorhome disposal needs a licensed facility A motorhome is not just a vehicle - it contains a gas system, a leisure battery, a fridge that may hold refrigerant, a chemical toilet and a fresh and waste water system. All of that has to be depolluted properly before the shell is processed. That is exactly what an Authorised Treatment Facility is licensed to do. Dumping a motorhome with an unlicensed operator risks the whole thing being abandoned somewhere with your name still on the V5C. #### Access and collection Tell us the overall length, the height and whether it is on a driveway, a storage compound or a farm field. Coachbuilts often need a larger transporter than a car, and storage sites usually need gate access arranged in advance. If the unit has not moved for years, expect flat tyres and seized brakes. That is routine and does not affect the price. #### Before we collect Empty the water tanks and the toilet cassette, remove any gas bottles (we cannot transport full cylinders), and take out anything you want to keep - awnings, solar panels, bike racks, TVs and cooking equipment are all worth more to you than to the crusher. #### Questions about motorhomes **Is a water-damaged motorhome worth anything?** Yes. The chassis, engine, gearbox, axles and catalytic converter still carry value regardless of what the habitation area looks like, and coachbuilts are heavy vehicles. **Do I need to remove the gas bottles?** Yes. We cannot transport full LPG cylinders. Remove them before collection and return them to your supplier or a licensed disposal point. **Can you collect from a storage compound?** Yes, but arrange gate access and let us know the site's opening hours when you book. Many compounds require the keyholder to be present. **Do you take touring caravans as well?** Yes, where access allows. Tell us the length and whether it can be towed or needs winching onto the transporter. **Will I get a Certificate of Destruction for a motorhome?** For anything with a V5C, yes - it is treated exactly like any other end-of-life vehicle and the DVLA record is closed. Untaxed touring caravans have no DVLA record to close. **Do I need to empty the water and waste tanks first?** Please do where you can. It is safer to move and it stops waste water spilling during the lift, though we can still collect if the tanks are seized or inaccessible. **Can you collect a motorhome from a storage yard or campsite?** Yes, but we need the site owner's permission and the access height and width in advance so we send a transporter that can physically reach the pitch. **Is the habitation gas system a problem?** No. Gas bottles should be removed and handed over separately, and the fixed system is depolluted safely at our licensed facility. Last reviewed: 2026-07-01 ### Failed Your MOT? Your Options and When Scrapping Wins URL: https://scrapacarscotland.com/mot-failure If your car has failed its MOT in Scotland, you have three options: repair it, sell it as a non-runner, or scrap it. Scrap A Car Scotland collects MOT failures free of charge anywhere in Scotland and pays 130 to 400 GBP by bank transfer on the day of collection. As a rule, if the repair bill is more than the car is worth with a fresh MOT, scrapping is the better outcome. Key facts: - Best for: Repair quote higher than the car's post-MOT value - Typical payment: 130 - 400 GBP by bank transfer - Collection: Free, anywhere in Scotland, usually 1-3 working days - MOT required: No. We collect vehicles with no MOT and no tax - Driving it: Illegal once the MOT expires, except to a pre-booked test or repair - Paperwork: Certificate of Destruction issued, DVLA notified by us An MOT failure is not automatically the end of a car, but it is the point at which most people find out what their vehicle is actually worth. The useful question is not 'can it be fixed' - almost anything can - but 'does the repair earn its money back'. #### Failures usually worth repairing These are consumable or bolt-on items with predictable costs. If the rest of the car is sound, fix them. - Tyres, wipers, bulbs and washer jets - Brake pads, discs and handbrake adjustment - Suspension bushes, drop links and track rod ends - Emissions failures caused by a service item or a sensor - Exhaust joints and mountings #### Failures that usually end the car These are structural or high-value repairs where the bill routinely exceeds the value of an older vehicle. - Corrosion in a prescribed area - sills, subframe mounts, suspension turrets, chassis rails - A cracked or distorted subframe or chassis leg - A failed catalytic converter or DPF on an older diesel - Head gasket or turbo failure discovered at the same time - Multiple structural advisories accumulating over consecutive years #### Doing the sums honestly Add the repair quote to twelve months of tax and insurance. Compare that against what the car would sell for with a fresh MOT - not what you paid for it, and not what you hope it is worth. If the repair costs more than the car will be worth afterwards, you are funding a vehicle that will present the same decision again next year. Scrapping puts money back rather than taking it, closes the DVLA record and cancels the insurance and tax liability. #### You can still drive to a pre-booked repair A vehicle that has failed its MOT may only be driven to a pre-arranged repair or test appointment, and only if it is roadworthy. If it failed on something dangerous, it must not be driven at all - which is a good reason to have it collected rather than moved. We collect MOT failures free anywhere we cover, running or not, and pay the same as for any other vehicle. There is no deduction for a failed test. #### Questions about mot failures **Do you pay less for a car that has failed its MOT?** No. We buy end-of-life vehicles on weight and reusable parts, so MOT status makes no difference to the quote. **Can I drive my car after it has failed the MOT?** Only to a pre-booked repair or retest, and only if the vehicle is roadworthy. If it failed on a dangerous defect it must not be driven at all. **Is corrosion always a write-off?** Not always, but corrosion in a prescribed structural area needs proper welded repair by a competent workshop, and on an older car that bill regularly exceeds the vehicle's value. **My car failed and the MOT has now expired. Can you still collect it?** Yes. No MOT and no tax are completely normal for the vehicles we collect. We bring the transporter, so it never needs to be driven. **Should I get a second opinion before scrapping?** For a borderline structural failure, yes - a second quote costs nothing. For a clearly terminal repair on an older car, it usually just delays the same decision. **Is it worth repairing an MOT failure instead of scrapping it?** Compare the repair quote with the car's realistic retail value plus what we would pay you today. Once welding, emissions or suspension work exceeds the car's value, scrapping is normally the better outcome. **Can I still drive the car to you after it failed?** Do not risk it. Driving a vehicle with dangerous defects or no valid MOT is an offence, and our collection is free anyway, so let the transporter come to you. **Do you buy cars that failed on structural corrosion?** Yes. Rot and structural failure are among the most common reasons cars come to us, and they do not stop us paying on weight and recoverable parts. Last reviewed: 2026-07-01 ## General questions and answers ### Quotes & Payment **How do I get a quote for my scrap car?** Fill in the quote form with your registration, make, model and postcode, or call 0330 123 0112. Most quotes are confirmed the same working day, and the price we agree is the price you are paid on collection. **How much is my scrap car worth?** Value depends on weight, age, condition, whether the engine runs, and current scrap metal prices. Small hatchbacks typically sit at the lower end, while larger 4x4s, vans and light commercials attract more because of the extra metal. **Do you pay cash for scrap cars?** No. Cash payments for scrap vehicles are illegal in the UK under the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013. We pay by bank transfer, usually the same day the vehicle is collected. **Are there any hidden fees?** None. Collection is free anywhere we cover in Scotland, there are no admin fees, and no deduction for DVLA paperwork. **Will the price change when you arrive?** Only if the vehicle is materially different from what was described, for example missing an engine, gearbox or catalytic converter when the quote assumed they were present. Describe it accurately and the quote stands. **How long is my scrap car quote valid for?** Seven days as standard. Scrap metal prices move week to week, so if you come back to us after that we will re-check the figure rather than quietly drop it on collection day. **Do you price match other scrap car buyers?** Tell us the figure you have been offered and who by. If it is a genuine quote from a licensed Authorised Treatment Facility we will usually match or beat it, but we will not match an inflated online figure that gets cut at the kerbside. **How soon does the money reach my bank?** The transfer is sent once the vehicle is loaded and the paperwork is signed. Faster Payments normally land within a couple of hours, and always the same working day for collections before 4pm. ### Collection **Is collection really free?** Yes. Free collection is included across our coverage area, including the Central Belt, Fife, Tayside, Lothians, Ayrshire and the North East. **How quickly can you collect?** Often same day or next day for the Central Belt and Fife. Rural and Highland collections are usually scheduled within a few working days to fit the transporter route. **Do I need to be there when you collect?** Someone should be present to hand over the keys, V5C and sign the collection paperwork. If that is not possible, we can arrange a nominated contact in advance. **Can you collect a car that does not start?** Yes. Our transporters are winch equipped, so non-runners, MOT failures, accident damage and insurance write-offs are all collected as standard. **Can you collect from a multi-storey, tight lane or private land?** In most cases yes. Tell us about access when you book so we can send a van or a smaller transporter rather than a full-size beavertail. **Can you collect at the weekend or in the evening?** We run Saturday collections across the Central Belt and Fife, and we can sometimes fit an early evening lift in summer. Ask when you book and we will tell you honestly what is available on your route. **What happens if I need to rearrange the collection?** Just call the office. There is no rebooking fee and no cancellation charge, and your agreed price stays in place as long as the vehicle has not changed. **Do you collect from the Highlands and Islands?** We cover the mainland Highlands on scheduled routes rather than one-off trips, so collection takes a few days longer. Island collections are quoted case by case depending on ferry access. ### Paperwork & Legal **What documents do I need?** Ideally the V5C logbook and photo ID showing your name and address matching the payment account. We can still collect without a V5C, but ID is mandatory under scrap metal legislation. **What if I have lost the V5C?** We can still take the vehicle. You should tell the DVLA the car has been scrapped, and we issue a Certificate of Destruction that confirms the disposal. **What is a Certificate of Destruction?** A CoD is issued by an Authorised Treatment Facility and confirms the vehicle has been permanently destroyed. It ends your liability for tax, insurance and any future fines linked to the vehicle. **Do I get a road tax refund?** Yes. Once the DVLA is notified, any full remaining months of vehicle tax are refunded automatically to the registered keeper. **Are you licensed?** Yes. We operate as an Authorised Treatment Facility under SEPA licence WCR/R/1137358 and hold a scrap metal dealer licence. **How do I tell the DVLA my car has been scrapped?** You do not need to. We notify the DVLA electronically as the Authorised Treatment Facility, and you receive written confirmation plus the Certificate of Destruction. If you prefer, you can also notify them yourself using the yellow section of the V5C. **Can I keep my private registration?** Yes, but you must transfer or retain it with the DVLA before we collect. Once the vehicle is destroyed the plate cannot be recovered. **What happens to my data when I sell you a car?** We keep only the records the Scrap Metal Dealers Act and the DVLA require, we do not sell your details on, and any personal data left in the vehicle is destroyed with it. ### Vehicles We Take **What vehicles do you buy?** Cars, vans, 4x4s, light commercials, MOT failures, insurance write-offs, non-runners, accident damaged vehicles and end-of-life vehicles of any age. **Do you take cars still on finance?** Not while outstanding finance is registered against the vehicle. Settle the agreement or get written release from the finance company first. **Do you buy hybrid or electric vehicles?** Yes. We handle high-voltage battery packs through the correct depollution route, so EVs and hybrids are accepted. **What happens to my car after collection?** It is depolluted at our Thornton facility, fluids and hazardous components are removed and recycled, reusable parts are recovered, and the shell is baled for metal recycling. **Do you buy motorhomes and campervans?** Yes. Motorhomes, campervans and horseboxes are all handled, though we may need extra access details because of the height and length before we can send the right transporter. **Can I remove parts before you collect?** Tell us first. Stripping the catalytic converter, battery, wheels or engine changes what the vehicle is worth, so the quote has to be adjusted before collection rather than argued about on the day. **Do you buy insurance write-off categories S and N?** Yes. Category S and N write-offs are bought and processed normally, and we will still issue a Certificate of Destruction so the vehicle can never return to the road under your name. ## Collection areas in Scotland Scrap A Car Scotland collects from every town listed below, free of charge, from the depot at Thornton, Fife. ### Scrap your car in Glasgow URL: https://scrapacarscotland.com/scrap-your-car-in-glasgow - Region: Greater Glasgow - Postcode districts: G1, G2, G3, G4, G5, G11, G12, G13, G14, G15, G20, G21, G22, G31, G32, G33, G34, G40, G41, G42, G43, G44, G45, G51, G52, G53 - Areas covered: Govan, Partick, Dennistoun, Shawlands, Pollok, Springburn, Castlemilk, Easterhouse, Maryhill - Distance from depot: about 52 miles - Typical collection: usually next working day Glasgow is our busiest collection area outside Fife. We run transporters into the city several times a week, so a car sitting in a tenement back court in Dennistoun or on a driveway in Newton Mearns is normally lifted within a day or two of you accepting the quote. Tenement and flat parking is the most common complication in Glasgow. Tell us on the call if the vehicle is in a shared back court, on a permit bay or behind a locked gate and we will send the right truck rather than turning up and failing the lift. ### Scrap your car in Edinburgh URL: https://scrapacarscotland.com/scrap-your-car-in-edinburgh - Region: Lothians - Postcode districts: EH1, EH2, EH3, EH4, EH5, EH6, EH7, EH8, EH9, EH10, EH11, EH12, EH13, EH14, EH15, EH16, EH17 - Areas covered: Leith, Portobello, Corstorphine, Morningside, Sighthill, Gorgie, Granton, Liberton - Distance from depot: about 30 miles - Typical collection: often same week, frequently next day Edinburgh sits half an hour from our Thornton yard over the Queensferry Crossing, which makes it one of the cheapest areas for us to service and one of the best prices we can pay. We collect from the whole city, from Leith right out to Balerno. Controlled parking zones and the city centre LEZ shape when we can get to you. We schedule central Edinburgh lifts around the restrictions, so if your car is on a residents' bay let us know the street and we will pick a window that works. ### Scrap your car in Aberdeen URL: https://scrapacarscotland.com/scrap-your-car-in-aberdeen - Region: North East - Postcode districts: AB10, AB11, AB12, AB15, AB16, AB21, AB22, AB23, AB24, AB25 - Areas covered: Bridge of Don, Dyce, Cove Bay, Mastrick, Torry, Kingswells, Bucksburn - Distance from depot: about 110 miles - Typical collection: typically within 2 to 4 working days We cover Aberdeen and the wider Aberdeenshire coast on scheduled runs rather than ad hoc trips, which is how we keep paying a proper price this far north instead of docking you for transport. A lot of Aberdeen work comes from ex-offshore workers clearing a second vehicle, and from salt-corroded coastal cars that have failed an MOT on structural rot. Neither is a problem: we buy non-runners and MOT failures at the same rate. ### Scrap your car in Dundee URL: https://scrapacarscotland.com/scrap-your-car-in-dundee - Region: Tayside - Postcode districts: DD1, DD2, DD3, DD4, DD5 - Areas covered: Broughty Ferry, Lochee, Menzieshill, Kirkton, Douglas, Monifieth - Distance from depot: about 26 miles - Typical collection: usually next working day Dundee is a short run up the coast from Thornton, so collections here are quick and the price reflects the low transport cost. We take everything from city runabouts to vans from the industrial estates. If you are in a Dundee multi-storey or a flat with allocated bays under the block, our recovery unit needs headroom. Mention the parking setup when you book and we will send a low-clearance truck. ### Scrap your car in Kirkcaldy URL: https://scrapacarscotland.com/scrap-your-car-in-kirkcaldy - Region: Fife - Postcode districts: KY1, KY2 - Areas covered: Dysart, Templehall, Linktown, Sinclairtown, Auchtertool, Kinghorn - Distance from depot: about 5 miles - Typical collection: often same day Kirkcaldy is on our doorstep. Our yard at Thornton is about five miles up the road, which means same-day collection is realistic if you call us in the morning, and it means we can pay at the very top of our range. Being this local, we can also handle awkward jobs other firms decline: cars stuck in garages, vehicles with no keys, and long-abandoned motors that need winching off a driveway. ### Scrap your car in Glenrothes URL: https://scrapacarscotland.com/scrap-your-car-in-glenrothes - Region: Fife - Postcode districts: KY6, KY7 - Areas covered: Leslie, Markinch, Thornton, Coaltown of Balgonie, Star, Milton of Balgonie - Distance from depot: about 4 miles - Typical collection: often same day Glenrothes is our home patch. The depot sits between Glenrothes and Kirkcaldy, so a call before lunch will usually get your car lifted the same afternoon with the money sent before the banks close. Plenty of Glenrothes customers drive the car to the yard themselves rather than wait for a truck. You are welcome to do that if it is still road legal and insured, and we will pay you on the spot. ### Scrap your car in Dunfermline URL: https://scrapacarscotland.com/scrap-your-car-in-dunfermline - Region: Fife - Postcode districts: KY11, KY12 - Areas covered: Rosyth, Inverkeithing, Crossford, Halbeath, Townhill, Kingseat - Distance from depot: about 17 miles - Typical collection: usually next working day Dunfermline and the wider west Fife area is covered daily. Whether the car is in Abbeyview, Rosyth or out towards Crossford, we can normally give you a firm collection slot on the first call. West Fife has a lot of new-build estates with narrow shared driveways. Our smaller recovery unit handles those, so no need to move the car onto the main road before we arrive. ### Scrap your car in Perth URL: https://scrapacarscotland.com/scrap-your-car-in-perth - Region: Tayside - Postcode districts: PH1, PH2 - Areas covered: Scone, Bridge of Earn, Almondbank, Methven, Luncarty - Distance from depot: about 28 miles - Typical collection: usually within 1 to 2 working days Perth sits on the main route north from our yard, so it is an easy run for us and a fast turnaround for you. We collect across the city and the surrounding Perthshire villages. Rural Perthshire addresses are fine. Farm tracks and single-track approaches just need flagging up front so we bring the right vehicle rather than a full-length transporter. ### Scrap your car in Stirling URL: https://scrapacarscotland.com/scrap-your-car-in-stirling - Region: Central - Postcode districts: FK7, FK8, FK9 - Areas covered: Bannockburn, Bridge of Allan, Causewayhead, Cambusbarron, Dunblane - Distance from depot: about 35 miles - Typical collection: usually within 1 to 2 working days Stirling and the surrounding Forth Valley towns are on a regular route for us. The city sits between our Fife base and the west, so we can often add your car to a run already going past. Student cars around the university are a steady part of our Stirling work. If the registered keeper has already left the country, we can still buy the vehicle provided the paperwork trail is in order - ask us and we will talk you through it. ### Scrap your car in Falkirk URL: https://scrapacarscotland.com/scrap-your-car-in-falkirk - Region: Central - Postcode districts: FK1, FK2, FK3, FK5, FK6 - Areas covered: Grangemouth, Larbert, Denny, Bo'ness, Polmont, Stenhousemuir - Distance from depot: about 30 miles - Typical collection: usually next working day Falkirk, Grangemouth and the surrounding towns are a short hop from the M9, and we cover the whole district including the smaller villages that some scrap firms skip. We buy a lot of ex-contractor vans and pickups around the Grangemouth industrial belt. Commercial vehicles are quoted separately from cars because the scrap weight is different, so give us the model and we will price it properly. ### Scrap your car in Livingston URL: https://scrapacarscotland.com/scrap-your-car-in-livingston - Region: West Lothian - Postcode districts: EH54, EH53, EH52 - Areas covered: Bathgate, Broxburn, Uphall, East Calder, Whitburn, Armadale - Distance from depot: about 35 miles - Typical collection: usually next working day Livingston and West Lothian are covered on our Edinburgh corridor runs. Because the truck is already heading that way most days, we can be flexible on timing. The estates around Livingston mostly have off-street parking, which makes for quick, clean lifts. Most collections here take under ten minutes on the doorstep. ### Scrap your car in Paisley URL: https://scrapacarscotland.com/scrap-your-car-in-paisley - Region: Renfrewshire - Postcode districts: PA1, PA2, PA3 - Areas covered: Renfrew, Johnstone, Linwood, Erskine, Elderslie, Barrhead - Distance from depot: about 58 miles - Typical collection: usually within 1 to 2 working days Paisley and the Renfrewshire towns are covered on the same runs as Glasgow. It is one of our highest-volume areas for older diesels and MOT failures. Paisley's older terraced streets can be tight for a full transporter. We often use a single-car recovery unit here, so on-street collections are rarely a problem. ### Scrap your car in Hamilton URL: https://scrapacarscotland.com/scrap-your-car-in-hamilton - Region: Lanarkshire - Postcode districts: ML3, ML4, ML1, ML2 - Areas covered: Motherwell, Bellshill, Wishaw, Blantyre, Larkhall, Uddingston - Distance from depot: about 55 miles - Typical collection: usually within 1 to 2 working days Hamilton, Motherwell and the Lanarkshire towns sit on our regular west-of-Scotland route. We collect right across the ML postcodes. Lanarkshire generates a lot of insurance write-off enquiries. If your car is a Category N or S write-off you can still sell it to us for scrap - bring the paperwork and we will handle the DVLA side. ### Scrap your car in East Kilbride URL: https://scrapacarscotland.com/scrap-your-car-in-east-kilbride - Region: Lanarkshire - Postcode districts: G74, G75 - Areas covered: Strathaven, Eaglesham, Busby, Clarkston, Newton Mearns - Distance from depot: about 57 miles - Typical collection: usually within 1 to 2 working days East Kilbride is covered on our Lanarkshire runs, taking in the town's villages and the surrounding south Glasgow suburbs. Because the town is largely post-war housing with garages and driveways, EK collections are typically straightforward and can be booked to a tight time window. ### Scrap your car in Cumbernauld URL: https://scrapacarscotland.com/scrap-your-car-in-cumbernauld - Region: North Lanarkshire - Postcode districts: G67, G68, G69 - Areas covered: Kilsyth, Croy, Moodiesburn, Muirhead, Kirkintilloch - Distance from depot: about 44 miles - Typical collection: usually next working day Cumbernauld sits directly on the A80 corridor between our yard and Glasgow, so it is one of the easiest towns for us to reach at short notice. Cumbernauld's split-level parking decks are the one thing worth flagging. Tell us which deck the car is on and we will confirm before the truck sets off. ### Scrap your car in Inverness URL: https://scrapacarscotland.com/scrap-your-car-in-inverness - Region: Highlands - Postcode districts: IV1, IV2, IV3 - Areas covered: Culloden, Nairn, Beauly, Muir of Ord, Dingwall - Distance from depot: about 145 miles - Typical collection: on scheduled Highland runs, usually within a week We reach Inverness and the Highlands on planned collection runs. Booking a few days ahead gets you a firm date and a price that is not eaten up by haulage. For Highland addresses it is worth grouping vehicles. If a neighbour or family member also has a car to scrap, tell us - two on one run means we can pay more for both. ### Scrap your car in Ayr URL: https://scrapacarscotland.com/scrap-your-car-in-ayr - Region: Ayrshire - Postcode districts: KA7, KA8, KA6 - Areas covered: Prestwick, Troon, Alloway, Mauchline, Maybole - Distance from depot: about 80 miles - Typical collection: typically within 2 to 4 working days Ayr and the Ayrshire coast are covered on scheduled west-coast runs, taking in Prestwick, Troon and the towns inland. Coastal corrosion is the usual reason Ayrshire cars come off the road. Structural rot that fails an MOT does not reduce what we pay - scrap value is based on weight and metal, not on whether it drives. ### Scrap your car in Kilmarnock URL: https://scrapacarscotland.com/scrap-your-car-in-kilmarnock - Region: Ayrshire - Postcode districts: KA1, KA2, KA3 - Areas covered: Irvine, Kilwinning, Stewarton, Galston, Dalry - Distance from depot: about 70 miles - Typical collection: typically within 2 to 4 working days Kilmarnock and north Ayrshire are collected on the same west-coast schedule as Ayr, covering the KA postcodes from Stewarton down to Irvine. We can collect from lock-ups and industrial units as well as homes, which suits the trade customers we deal with regularly around Kilmarnock. ### Scrap your car in Dumfries URL: https://scrapacarscotland.com/scrap-your-car-in-dumfries - Region: Dumfries and Galloway - Postcode districts: DG1, DG2 - Areas covered: Lochmaben, Annan, Dalbeattie, Castle Douglas, Lockerbie - Distance from depot: about 105 miles - Typical collection: on scheduled southern runs, usually within a week Dumfries and Galloway is a long run for most Scottish scrap dealers, which is why local prices are often poor. We cover it on planned routes and still pay a proper figure. Rural D&G addresses often mean farm and estate vehicles. We take 4x4s, pickups and light commercials as well as cars, so it is worth clearing more than one at a time. ### Scrap your car in Greenock URL: https://scrapacarscotland.com/scrap-your-car-in-greenock - Region: Inverclyde - Postcode districts: PA15, PA16, PA14 - Areas covered: Gourock, Port Glasgow, Kilmacolm, Wemyss Bay, Langbank - Distance from depot: about 68 miles - Typical collection: typically within 2 to 3 working days Greenock, Gourock and Port Glasgow are covered on our Inverclyde runs out past Glasgow, right along the lower Clyde. The steep hill streets above Greenock town centre need a winch rather than a straight drive-on lift. That is standard for us - just say the car is on a slope when you book. ### Scrap your car in Clydebank URL: https://scrapacarscotland.com/scrap-your-car-in-clydebank - Region: West Dunbartonshire - Postcode districts: G81, G82, G60 - Areas covered: Dumbarton, Alexandria, Old Kilpatrick, Bowling, Duntocher - Distance from depot: about 60 miles - Typical collection: usually within 1 to 2 working days Clydebank and the Dunbartonshire towns along the north bank of the Clyde are covered alongside our Glasgow schedule. High-rise and deck-access parking is common here. We will confirm access before dispatch so nobody wastes a morning waiting on a truck that cannot reach the car. ### Scrap your car in Coatbridge URL: https://scrapacarscotland.com/scrap-your-car-in-coatbridge - Region: North Lanarkshire - Postcode districts: ML5, ML6 - Areas covered: Airdrie, Bargeddie, Glenboig, Caldercruix, Chapelhall - Distance from depot: about 48 miles - Typical collection: usually next working day Coatbridge and Airdrie sit just off the M8 and are quick for us to reach, so short-notice collections are usually possible. Monklands has a strong trade in older workhorse cars. If yours has been off the road for years with a SORN in place, that is fine - a SORN vehicle can still be scrapped and we handle the DVLA notification. ### Scrap your car in St Andrews URL: https://scrapacarscotland.com/scrap-your-car-in-st-andrews - Region: Fife - Postcode districts: KY16, KY15, KY10 - Areas covered: Cupar, Anstruther, Leuchars, Crail, Guardbridge - Distance from depot: about 22 miles - Typical collection: usually next working day St Andrews and the East Neuk are a short run from the yard, covering Cupar, the coastal villages and the university town itself. Student vehicles at the end of term are a big part of our St Andrews work. Book before you leave and we will collect and pay by transfer even if you are no longer in town. ### Scrap your car in Elgin URL: https://scrapacarscotland.com/scrap-your-car-in-elgin - Region: Moray - Postcode districts: IV30, IV31, IV32 - Areas covered: Lossiemouth, Forres, Buckie, Fochabers, Keith - Distance from depot: about 135 miles - Typical collection: on scheduled north runs, usually within a week Elgin and the Moray coast are served on our northern collection runs, usually combined with Aberdeenshire and Inverness work. RAF Lossiemouth postings mean a steady flow of cars needing cleared quickly before a move. If you have a hard deadline, tell us the date and we will build the run around it. ### Scrap your car in Motherwell URL: https://scrapacarscotland.com/scrap-your-car-in-motherwell - Region: Lanarkshire - Postcode districts: ML1, ML4 - Areas covered: Wishaw, Bellshill, Newarthill, Carfin, Holytown, Viewpark - Distance from depot: about 48 miles - Typical collection: usually next working day Motherwell and Wishaw sit on our regular Lanarkshire run, so cars here are normally lifted within a day of you accepting the quote. We take runners, non-runners and MOT failures from across the ML1 and ML4 districts. A lot of Motherwell collections come from ex-council semis with narrow rear lanes. If access is tight behind the house, tell us and we will bring the smaller recovery unit rather than the full transporter. ### Scrap your car in Irvine URL: https://scrapacarscotland.com/scrap-your-car-in-irvine - Region: Ayrshire - Postcode districts: KA11, KA12, KA13 - Areas covered: Kilwinning, Dreghorn, Springside, Stevenston, Girdle Toll - Distance from depot: about 72 miles - Typical collection: typically within 2 working days Irvine and the North Ayrshire coast are covered on our west runs alongside Kilmarnock and Ayr. Being a new town, most collections here are straightforward driveway or parking-court lifts. Coastal salt air means a lot of Irvine cars fail their MOT on sills and brake lines. Structural corrosion does not reduce what we pay - the vehicle is weighed and depolluted either way. ### Scrap your car in Cambuslang URL: https://scrapacarscotland.com/scrap-your-car-in-cambuslang - Region: Greater Glasgow - Postcode districts: G72, G73 - Areas covered: Rutherglen, Halfway, Blantyre, Burnside, Whitlawburn - Distance from depot: about 50 miles - Typical collection: usually next working day Cambuslang and Rutherglen sit right on our Glasgow south-east route, which means quick turnaround and a strong price with very little transport cost baked in. Main Street and the older terraces have restricted loading times. Give us the street name when booking and we will schedule the lift outside the restricted window so nothing gets ticketed. ### Scrap your car in Bearsden URL: https://scrapacarscotland.com/scrap-your-car-in-bearsden - Region: Greater Glasgow - Postcode districts: G61, G62 - Areas covered: Milngavie, Kessington, Westerton, Baljaffray, Canniesburn - Distance from depot: about 58 miles - Typical collection: usually next working day Bearsden and Milngavie are served on our north Glasgow run. Plenty of the work here is a second family car or an older estate that has finally failed its MOT rather than a scrap-yard wreck. Long private driveways and gravel are common in G61. Our driver will winch from the drive rather than manoeuvre the transporter in, so there is no risk to your surface or gateposts. ### Scrap your car in Bishopbriggs URL: https://scrapacarscotland.com/scrap-your-car-in-bishopbriggs - Region: Greater Glasgow - Postcode districts: G64, G66 - Areas covered: Kirkintilloch, Torrance, Lenzie, Auchinairn, Robroyston - Distance from depot: about 55 miles - Typical collection: usually next working day Bishopbriggs, Lenzie and Kirkintilloch are grouped on one East Dunbartonshire run, so we can normally give you a firm morning or afternoon slot rather than a vague all-day window. The canal-side streets around Cadder are narrow with parked cars both sides. We use the smaller spec-lift truck there, so a tight street is not a reason we will cancel on you. ### Scrap your car in Musselburgh URL: https://scrapacarscotland.com/scrap-your-car-in-musselburgh - Region: Lothians - Postcode districts: EH21, EH22, EH33 - Areas covered: Wallyford, Prestonpans, Dalkeith, Whitecraig, Tranent - Distance from depot: about 33 miles - Typical collection: often next day Musselburgh and the East Lothian coast are close enough to Thornton that we treat them as an Edinburgh-area collection, with the same fast turnaround and same pricing. Being outside the Edinburgh LEZ, older diesels in Musselburgh often get scrapped when the owner starts commuting into the city. We handle the DVLA notification the same day so you stop paying tax and insurance immediately. ### Scrap your car in Arbroath URL: https://scrapacarscotland.com/scrap-your-car-in-arbroath - Region: Tayside - Postcode districts: DD11, DD10 - Areas covered: Carnoustie, Montrose, Friockheim, Letham, Inverkeilor - Distance from depot: about 42 miles - Typical collection: usually within 2 working days Arbroath, Carnoustie and Montrose are covered on our Angus coastal run, taking in everything from harbour vans to family hatchbacks. Sea spray on the Angus coast rots brake lines and subframes faster than inland. If your car has been declared beyond economical repair for corrosion, that is exactly the sort of vehicle we buy every week. ### Scrap your car in Peterhead URL: https://scrapacarscotland.com/scrap-your-car-in-peterhead - Region: North East - Postcode districts: AB42, AB43, AB41 - Areas covered: Fraserburgh, Mintlaw, Ellon, Boddam, Cruden Bay - Distance from depot: about 130 miles - Typical collection: on scheduled north runs, usually within a week Peterhead and Fraserburgh are served on our planned Aberdeenshire runs. Scheduling rather than one-off trips is how we avoid knocking money off the price for the distance. Fishing and harbour work means a lot of hard-used 4x4s and pickups up here. Commercial vehicles are weighed and priced the same way as cars, and we can collect from a yard or quayside as easily as a driveway. ### Scrap your car in Alloa URL: https://scrapacarscotland.com/scrap-your-car-in-alloa - Region: Central - Postcode districts: FK10, FK11, FK12, FK13 - Areas covered: Tillicoultry, Alva, Sauchie, Clackmannan, Dollar - Distance from depot: about 24 miles - Typical collection: usually next working day Alloa and the Hillfoots villages are one of our closest areas outside Fife, just over the Kincardine Bridge, which keeps transport cost low and the offer high. We cover the whole of Clackmannanshire from the same run, so Tillicoultry, Alva and Dollar get the same next-day service as Alloa itself rather than being treated as outlying. ### Scrap your car in Galashiels URL: https://scrapacarscotland.com/scrap-your-car-in-galashiels - Region: Borders - Postcode districts: TD1, TD6, TD7 - Areas covered: Selkirk, Melrose, Peebles, Hawick, Innerleithen - Distance from depot: about 68 miles - Typical collection: on scheduled Borders runs, usually within 3 to 5 days The Scottish Borders are covered on a planned route through Galashiels, Selkirk and Hawick rather than individual trips, which is how we keep serving an area most scrap buyers quietly refuse. Farm and rural collections are routine here. If the vehicle is in a field, a steading or up a rough track, say so when you book and we will send the 4x4-capable recovery unit. ### Scrap your car in Leven URL: https://scrapacarscotland.com/scrap-your-car-in-leven - Region: Fife - Postcode districts: KY8, KY9 - Areas covered: Methil, Buckhaven, Kennoway, Lundin Links, Windygates, Largo - Distance from depot: about 7 miles - Typical collection: usually same or next working day Leven and the Levenmouth towns are on our doorstep - seven miles from the Thornton yard - so collections here are the quickest and best paid runs we do anywhere in Scotland. Because Levenmouth is effectively local to us, we can often collect the same day you accept the quote. There is no distance deduction in a Leven price at all. ### Scrap your car in Cupar URL: https://scrapacarscotland.com/scrap-your-car-in-cupar - Region: Fife - Postcode districts: KY14, KY15 - Areas covered: Ladybank, Springfield, Auchtermuchty, Freuchie, Pitscottie, Ceres - Distance from depot: about 14 miles - Typical collection: usually next working day Cupar and the north Fife villages sit fourteen miles up the A92 and A91 from our yard, close enough that farm and rural collections here are routine rather than a special trip. A lot of north Fife vehicles come off farms and smallholdings. Tractors aside, we take pickups, 4x4s and vans on the same weight and parts basis as cars, and the recovery unit handles soft ground and steading access. ### Scrap your car in Cowdenbeath URL: https://scrapacarscotland.com/scrap-your-car-in-cowdenbeath - Region: Fife - Postcode districts: KY4, KY5 - Areas covered: Lochgelly, Kelty, Crossgates, Hill of Beath, Cardenden, Ballingry - Distance from depot: about 10 miles - Typical collection: usually same or next working day Cowdenbeath, Lochgelly and Kelty sit ten minutes from the yard just off the M90, which makes central Fife one of the few areas where we can regularly collect on the day of the call. Ex-mining rows here often have rear lanes rather than driveways. Tell us if the car sits in a shared back lane and we will send the short recovery unit rather than a full transporter. ### Scrap your car in Burntisland URL: https://scrapacarscotland.com/scrap-your-car-in-burntisland - Region: Fife - Postcode districts: KY3 - Areas covered: Kinghorn, Aberdour, Dalgety Bay, Auchtertool, Kingseat - Distance from depot: about 10 miles - Typical collection: usually next working day The Fife coastal strip from Aberdour through Burntisland to Kinghorn is a ten mile run for us, and one we cover several times a week on the way to and from Edinburgh jobs. Salt air along this stretch is brutal on sills, brake lines and subframes. Cars that fail an MOT on corrosion rather than mechanicals are exactly what we buy, and structural rot does not reduce the offer. ### Scrap your car in Rosyth URL: https://scrapacarscotland.com/scrap-your-car-in-rosyth - Region: Fife - Postcode districts: KY11, KY12 - Areas covered: Inverkeithing, North Queensferry, Dalgety Bay, Limekilns, Charlestown - Distance from depot: about 19 miles - Typical collection: usually next working day Rosyth, Inverkeithing and the villages around the Forth bridgeheads are nineteen miles from the yard and sit right on our Edinburgh route, so we are passing most days anyway. Dockyard and MOD shift patterns mean a lot of second cars sit unused for months here. We are happy to deal with an owner who is away on rotation as long as the V5C details and payment account match. ### Scrap your car in Anstruther URL: https://scrapacarscotland.com/scrap-your-car-in-anstruther - Region: Fife - Postcode districts: KY10 - Areas covered: Pittenweem, St Monans, Crail, Elie, Cellardyke, Kilrenny - Distance from depot: about 22 miles - Typical collection: usually within 2 working days The East Neuk villages from Elie round to Crail are twenty-odd miles east of the yard, and we run the coast road often enough that Anstruther collections rarely wait more than a couple of days. Harbour-front streets here are narrow and often cobbled, with no room for a full transporter. We plan East Neuk lifts on the small recovery unit and pick a window outside the summer visitor peak where we can. ### Scrap your car in Kinross URL: https://scrapacarscotland.com/scrap-your-car-in-kinross - Region: Fife - Postcode districts: KY13 - Areas covered: Milnathort, Kinnesswood, Scotlandwell, Powmill, Crook of Devon - Distance from depot: about 14 miles - Typical collection: usually next working day Kinross sits fourteen miles from Thornton straight up the M90, which makes it one of the cheapest areas we serve and one where the quote holds up well against anything in Perth or Fife. Loch Leven side roads and rural driveways are the norm rather than kerbside parking. A long private drive or a gravel yard is no problem if you flag it when booking. ### Scrap your car in Grangemouth URL: https://scrapacarscotland.com/scrap-your-car-in-grangemouth - Region: Central - Postcode districts: FK3, FK2 - Areas covered: Bo'ness, Polmont, Laurieston, Skinflats, Carronshore - Distance from depot: about 27 miles - Typical collection: usually next working day Grangemouth is a straightforward run over the Kincardine Bridge and one we combine with Falkirk and Bo'ness work, so vehicles here move quickly and cheaply. Industrial estate and refinery-area collections need site access details in advance. If the vehicle is inside a controlled yard, give us the gate and contact when you book so the driver is not turned away. ### Scrap your car in Linlithgow URL: https://scrapacarscotland.com/scrap-your-car-in-linlithgow - Region: West Lothian - Postcode districts: EH49 - Areas covered: Bo'ness, Winchburgh, Philpstoun, Bridgend, Torphichen - Distance from depot: about 32 miles - Typical collection: usually next working day Linlithgow is just over half an hour from the yard on the M9, and we cover it alongside Falkirk and Bathgate on the same standing route through central Scotland. The High Street and the wynds behind it are tight and often permit-controlled. We schedule Linlithgow lifts outside peak hours and use the smaller unit for anything off the main street. ### Scrap your car in Bathgate URL: https://scrapacarscotland.com/scrap-your-car-in-bathgate - Region: West Lothian - Postcode districts: EH47, EH48 - Areas covered: Armadale, Whitburn, Blackburn, Fauldhouse, Boghall, Torphichen - Distance from depot: about 40 miles - Typical collection: usually next working day Bathgate and the surrounding West Lothian towns are collected on our standing M8 corridor run, which keeps the transport cost low enough that the quote stands comparison with anything in Edinburgh. We see a lot of high-mileage commuter diesels here - cars that have done the Edinburgh or Glasgow run daily for a decade. Mileage does not reduce a scrap offer; weight, parts and completeness are what matter. ### Scrap your car in Dalkeith URL: https://scrapacarscotland.com/scrap-your-car-in-dalkeith - Region: Lothians - Postcode districts: EH22 - Areas covered: Bonnyrigg, Eskbank, Newtongrange, Mayfield, Gorebridge, Loanhead - Distance from depot: about 35 miles - Typical collection: often same week, frequently next day Midlothian towns from Dalkeith through Bonnyrigg to Gorebridge are thirty-five miles from the yard and fall inside our regular Edinburgh loop rather than needing their own trip. Newer estate streets here are narrow with parking on both sides. Where a transporter cannot turn, we use the recovery unit and lift the car out to the nearest wide point rather than cancelling the job. ### Scrap your car in Penicuik URL: https://scrapacarscotland.com/scrap-your-car-in-penicuik - Region: Lothians - Postcode districts: EH26, EH25 - Areas covered: Roslin, Auchendinny, Bilston, Howgate, Silverburn - Distance from depot: about 42 miles - Typical collection: usually within 2 working days Penicuik and the Midlothian villages along the A701 are covered on our Edinburgh and Borders routes, so a collection here does not carry the surcharge a small operator would need to add. Winter access matters on the Pentlands side. If your road ices badly or you sit up a steep unadopted track, tell us and we will plan the lift for a morning we can get up and out safely. ### Scrap your car in Haddington URL: https://scrapacarscotland.com/scrap-your-car-in-haddington - Region: Lothians - Postcode districts: EH41, EH39, EH42 - Areas covered: Tranent, North Berwick, Dunbar, Gullane, East Linton, Longniddry - Distance from depot: about 45 miles - Typical collection: usually within 2 to 3 working days East Lothian is served on a planned run through Haddington out to Dunbar and North Berwick, which lets us cover a rural county properly instead of cherry-picking the easy addresses. Farm steadings, coastal cottages and long private drives are normal here. Soft ground and field access are fine with notice; we send the 4x4-capable recovery unit rather than a low-slung transporter. ### Scrap your car in Kirkintilloch URL: https://scrapacarscotland.com/scrap-your-car-in-kirkintilloch - Region: Greater Glasgow - Postcode districts: G66, G65 - Areas covered: Lenzie, Kilsyth, Milton of Campsie, Torrance, Twechar, Waterside - Distance from depot: about 48 miles - Typical collection: usually next working day Kirkintilloch, Lenzie and Kilsyth sit on the northern edge of our Glasgow route, close enough to Cumbernauld that they are picked up on the same scheduled run. Cars parked just outside the Glasgow LEZ boundary still lose value the moment they cannot be driven into the city. If yours failed the zone rather than the MOT, it is worth a quote before you assume it is worthless. ### Scrap your car in Airdrie URL: https://scrapacarscotland.com/scrap-your-car-in-airdrie - Region: North Lanarkshire - Postcode districts: ML6 - Areas covered: Coatbridge, Caldercruix, Plains, Chapelhall, Calderbank, Salsburgh - Distance from depot: about 46 miles - Typical collection: usually next working day Airdrie is collected alongside Coatbridge and Motherwell on our standing North Lanarkshire route, straight down the M8 and off at Junction 6, which keeps the price competitive. Lanarkshire gives us a steady flow of cars that are mechanically finished but cosmetically fine. Ask about salvage value before settling for scrap weight - sometimes the parts are worth more than the metal. ### Scrap your car in Dunblane URL: https://scrapacarscotland.com/scrap-your-car-in-dunblane - Region: Central - Postcode districts: FK15, FK16 - Areas covered: Bridge of Allan, Doune, Callander, Deanston, Kinbuck - Distance from depot: about 40 miles - Typical collection: usually within 2 working days Dunblane, Bridge of Allan and Doune are covered from the same run as Stirling, forty miles from the yard over the Kincardine Bridge and up the A9. Plenty of vehicles here are second cars on gravel drives behind gates or hedging. Give us the access details and a rough turning space and the driver will arrive with the right unit first time. ### Scrap your car in Forfar URL: https://scrapacarscotland.com/scrap-your-car-in-forfar - Region: Tayside - Postcode districts: DD8, DD9 - Areas covered: Kirriemuir, Brechin, Glamis, Letham, Edzell, Memus - Distance from depot: about 48 miles - Typical collection: on scheduled Angus runs, usually within 2 to 4 days Forfar and the Angus glens towns are served on planned runs north through Dundee and Arbroath, which is how we keep paying a proper price this far from the yard. Agricultural Angus means pickups, 4x4s and farm hacks as often as family cars. Non-runners sitting in a shed or a field for years are normal collections for us, not awkward ones. ## Articles and guides Full text of every guide published by Scrap A Car Scotland. URL: https://scrapacarscotland.com/blog/how-much-is-my-scrap-car-worth Category: Prices Published: 2026-06-02 Last reviewed: 2026-06-02 **Short answer:** A scrap car in Scotland is worth its weight in metal plus any reusable parts, adjusted for condition and completeness - there is no single flat figure. Scrap A Car Scotland quotes from your registration, mileage and honest condition, holds the price for a set period and never deducts admin, paperwork or collection fees. Every week people ask us for a single figure for a scrap car. There isn't one, and anybody who gives you a flat number before asking about the vehicle is either guessing or planning to change it when they turn up. A genuine quote is built from four or five inputs. Once you know what they are, you can judge whether a price is fair before you agree to anything. #### 1. Weight and the current scrap metal price The baseline value of an end-of-life vehicle is its shell: steel, aluminium and copper. A small hatchback might weigh under a tonne, a large 4x4 or van closer to two and a half. Heavier vehicles are worth more before anything else is considered. Metal prices move week to week on world markets. That is why a quote is usually held for a set number of days rather than open-ended. If a buyer refuses to put a time limit on a very high figure, treat it as a warning sign. #### 2. Reusable parts A car that is mechanically sound but failed its MOT on structural rust is worth more than a fire-damaged shell, because the engine, gearbox, alternator, doors and lights can be reused. Catalytic converters and diesel particulate filters carry precious metals and are a meaningful part of the value on many models. This is why we ask whether the car is complete. A vehicle missing its cat, wheels or battery is worth less, and it is much better to tell us up front than to have it discovered on the driveway. #### 3. Whether it runs, and how we get to it A runner that can be driven onto a transporter costs less to collect than a non-runner in a tight tenement back court that needs winching. Both are collected free by us across our coverage area, but access does affect how a job is planned. Give an honest description of the parking situation: kerbside, locked car park, farm track, second-floor multi-storey. It changes the vehicle we send, not usually the price. #### 4. Where the car is Our depot is in Thornton, Fife. Central Belt, Fife, Tayside and the Lothians are routine daily runs. Highland, Argyll and the far south-west take more planning, and the collection window is usually longer rather than the price being lower. #### What should never change the price Admin fees, paperwork fees, DVLA notification fees and collection charges are not legitimate deductions on a scrap car in Scotland. Neither is a driver renegotiating on the driveway for a fault you already described. The figure we quote is the figure paid by bank transfer on collection. If a buyer's price drops when the transporter arrives, you are entitled to refuse and send them away. Key takeaways: - Value is mostly weight plus reusable parts, adjusted for condition. - Quotes should carry an expiry date because metal prices move. - No admin, paperwork or collection fees should ever be deducted. - Describe missing parts up front so the price holds on the day. ### Certificate of Destruction: what it is and why you must have one URL: https://scrapacarscotland.com/blog/certificate-of-destruction-explained Category: DVLA & paperwork Published: 2026-05-19 Last reviewed: 2026-05-19 **Short answer:** A Certificate of Destruction is the only document that legally ends your responsibility for a vehicle in the UK. Only an Authorised Treatment Facility can issue one. Scrap A Car Scotland notifies the DVLA on the day of collection and issues your CoD, which closes the tax, insurance and penalty liability for good. The Certificate of Destruction is the single most important piece of paper in scrapping a car, and it is the one most people have never heard of until something goes wrong. #### What it actually proves A CoD confirms the vehicle was destroyed at an Authorised Treatment Facility and its record has been closed with the DVLA. From that point the car cannot legally be driven, taxed, insured or sold on, and you are no longer the responsible keeper. It is your protection against everything that can otherwise follow a car you thought was gone: parking charges, speeding notices, fly-tipping penalties and continuous insurance enforcement letters. #### Who can issue one Only a SEPA licensed Authorised Treatment Facility can issue a CoD in Scotland. A man with a trailer and cash in an envelope cannot, whatever he tells you. Ask for the licence number before the vehicle is loaded. Ours is SEPA WCR/R/1137358. #### When you should expect it The ATF has seven days from destruction to notify the DVLA, and the certificate is typically issued electronically within that window. You should also receive a DVLA acknowledgement letter confirming the record is closed. Chase it if nothing has arrived after four weeks. #### What to do on the day of collection Remove the number plates only if the collector asks you to, hand over the V5C log book, and keep the yellow section (V5C/3) for your own records. Take a photograph of the vehicle on the transporter with the collector's paperwork. It takes ten seconds and settles any dispute later. Key takeaways: - Only a licensed ATF can issue a Certificate of Destruction. - The CoD ends your legal responsibility for the vehicle. - Ask for the SEPA licence number before the car is loaded. - Keep the V5C/3 yellow slip and photograph the collection. ### The DVLA paperwork checklist for scrapping a car URL: https://scrapacarscotland.com/blog/dvla-paperwork-when-scrapping-a-car Category: DVLA & paperwork Published: 2026-05-05 Last reviewed: 2026-05-05 **Short answer:** Scrapping a car in Scotland needs two things: the V5C logbook (section 9 completed or the yellow slip handed over) and DVLA notification that the vehicle has been scrapped. Scrap A Car Scotland handles the DVLA notification on the day of collection and issues your Certificate of Destruction, so there is nothing left for you to post or file. Scrapping is mostly a phone call and a collection. The paperwork around it is short, but skipping a step is what generates fines months later. #### Before collection Find the V5C log book. If it is lost you can still scrap the car, but tell the collector in advance so the notification is handled differently. Clear the vehicle out completely, including the glovebox, boot, door pockets and under the seats, and remove any toll tag or dashcam. Cancel nothing yet. Tax and insurance should stay in place until the car is physically gone. #### On the day Hand the full V5C to the collector and keep the yellow V5C/3 slip. Check the paperwork names a licensed ATF and lists the registration correctly, including the mileage if it is recorded. #### Straight afterwards The ATF notifies the DVLA, but you should also see the confirmation. Then cancel your insurance policy and claim any refund, and check that your road tax direct debit has stopped. Any full remaining months of tax are refunded automatically once the DVLA record is updated. If you have a private registration you want to keep, you must retain or transfer it before the car is scrapped. Once the record is closed the plate is gone. Key takeaways: - Keep tax and insurance active until the car has actually left. - Hand over the V5C, keep the yellow V5C/3 slip. - Retain a private plate before scrapping, never after. - Expect a DVLA confirmation letter; chase it if it doesn't arrive. ### Can you scrap a car without a V5C log book? URL: https://scrapacarscotland.com/blog/scrapping-a-car-without-a-v5c Category: DVLA & paperwork Published: 2026-04-21 Last reviewed: 2026-04-21 **Short answer:** You can scrap a car without a V5C logbook in the UK. You need photo ID, proof you own the vehicle, and a written declaration to the DVLA instead of the logbook. Scrap A Car Scotland buys cars without a V5C across Scotland and handles the DVLA side, so a lost logbook never stops a collection. Missing log books are common, especially with inherited cars, long-term driveway projects and vehicles bought years ago from a private seller. #### You can still scrap it A V5C makes everything simpler, but its absence is not a blocker. What matters is that you are the legal keeper and can show a reasonable link to the vehicle: insurance documents, previous MOT certificates, a bill of sale, garage invoices or a letter confirming you are dealing with the estate. #### How the notification works instead Without a V5C, write to the DVLA at Swansea confirming the vehicle has been scrapped, giving the registration, make, model and the name and address of the Authorised Treatment Facility that took it. Keep a copy. The ATF will still notify the DVLA and issue your Certificate of Destruction. #### Extra care with no paperwork Anyone offering cash and no documents for a car with no log book should be avoided outright. That is exactly the route stolen and fly-tipped vehicles take, and your name is on the last record. Insist on a licensed ATF, a written collection note and a CoD. Key takeaways: - No V5C is not a barrier to a legitimate scrap. - Bring any evidence of ownership you can find. - Write to the DVLA yourself as a backup notification. - Never take cash-and-no-paperwork for an undocumented car. ### Glasgow's Low Emission Zone: options for a non-compliant car URL: https://scrapacarscotland.com/blog/glasgow-lez-what-to-do-with-a-non-compliant-car Category: Local Published: 2026-04-07 Last reviewed: 2026-04-07 **Short answer:** If your car is banned by Glasgow's Low Emission Zone, the realistic options are sell it outside the zone, pay the daily charge, or scrap it. For an older diesel needing repairs, scrapping usually makes the most financial sense. Scrap A Car Scotland collects non-compliant cars free across Glasgow, pays by bank transfer and issues a Certificate of Destruction. Glasgow's Low Emission Zone put a hard deadline on a lot of otherwise usable cars. Broadly, petrols before roughly 2006 and diesels before roughly 2015 fall outside the standard, though you should always check your own vehicle rather than rely on the year alone. #### Option one: keep it and avoid the zone Viable if you rarely drive into the city centre and the car is otherwise cheap to run. It stops being viable the moment penalties start stacking, because they escalate with each breach in a rolling period. #### Option two: sell it outside the zone Non-compliant cars still have a market in rural Scotland and the Borders. If the vehicle has a long MOT and a solid body, private sale will usually beat scrap value. If it needs work worth more than the car, you are only moving the problem. #### Option three: scrap it This is the honest answer for a large number of LEZ casualties: a fifteen-year-old diesel with an advisory list, corroded sills and a failing DPF is not worth a repair bill it will never earn back. Scrapping closes the DVLA record, ends the insurance and tax cost, and puts money back rather than taking it. We collect from every Glasgow postcode free of charge, including tenement back courts and permit-only streets where access is tight. #### Doing the sums Add twelve months of tax, insurance and expected repairs, then subtract the realistic private sale price. If that number is negative and you can't avoid the zone, scrapping is the rational move rather than the defeatist one. Key takeaways: - Check your specific vehicle, not just its registration year. - Private sale beats scrap only if the car has a real MOT life left. - Penalties escalate quickly on repeat breaches. - Free collection from every Glasgow postcode, tight access included. ### How to prepare your car for scrap collection URL: https://scrapacarscotland.com/blog/how-to-prepare-your-car-for-collection Category: Scrapping guide Published: 2026-03-24 Last reviewed: 2026-03-24 **Short answer:** Before a scrap car collection, remove all personal belongings, take off a private plate if you want to keep it, have photo ID and the V5C ready, and make sure the vehicle is accessible for a transporter. Scrap A Car Scotland handles everything else on the day, including DVLA notification and same-day payment. Collections go wrong for boring reasons: a blocked driveway, a missing key, a wallet left in the door pocket. None of it is complicated to avoid. #### Empty the car properly Glovebox, boot, spare wheel well, under the seats, door pockets, sun visors and the parcel shelf. Look for sunglasses, chargers, paperwork, toll tags, dashcams and anything sentimental. Once the vehicle is processed nothing can be recovered. #### Leave the vehicle intact Do not remove the battery, catalytic converter, wheels or body panels before collection. Those parts are part of the quoted value, and stripping them means the price has to be recalculated on the driveway, which nobody enjoys. #### Keys, fuel and plates Hand over every key you have. Fuel left in the tank is fine and is drained safely at the facility. Leave the plates on unless you are retaining a private registration, in which case that must be done with the DVLA before collection. #### Sort access in advance Move other vehicles out of the way, unlock gates, and tell us in advance about narrow lanes, low bridges, height barriers, permit bays or a car parked in a rear court. Our drivers plan the right vehicle around what you tell us. Key takeaways: - Search the whole cabin, not just the glovebox. - Leave the battery, cat and wheels on the car. - Retain a private plate before collection day. - Flag tight access when you book, not on the day. ### Scrap car prices in Scotland: what per-tonne rates actually mean for your car URL: https://scrapacarscotland.com/blog/scrap-car-prices-scotland Category: Prices Published: 2026-07-07 Last reviewed: 2026-07-07 **Short answer:** Scrap car prices in Scotland are set by kerb weight multiplied by the current per-tonne rate for shredded steel, then adjusted for reusable parts, the catalytic converter and how far the collection is. A typical small hatchback weighs under a tonne, a large 4x4 well over two, which is why the same day's rate produces very different quotes. Almost every scrap price question comes down to one thing people are not told: the trade buys metal by the tonne, not cars by the unit. Once you know your car's kerb weight and roughly what the market is paying per tonne, you can sanity check any quote in about thirty seconds. This is how the number is actually built, in the order the buyer builds it. #### Start with kerb weight, not the model name Kerb weight is printed in the handbook and usually on the V5C. A Corsa or Fiesta sits around 1,000 to 1,150kg. A Focus or Astra estate around 1,300 to 1,450kg. A Qashqai or CR-V around 1,500 to 1,700kg. A Discovery or large van can pass 2,200kg. That spread is the single biggest reason two neighbours get very different prices on the same day from the same buyer. It is not favouritism, it is arithmetic. #### Apply the per-tonne rate Scrap steel is a traded commodity and the rate moves week to week with global demand, energy costs and export markets. Authorised treatment facilities buy at that rate less their processing cost, then quote you what is left after depollution, transport and margin. When the market rises, quotes rise across the board within a couple of weeks. When it falls, they fall. Any buyer promising a fixed price months in advance is either quoting low to be safe or planning to renegotiate on the driveway. #### Add what can be reused rather than shredded A car is not only steel. A working catalytic converter, an intact battery, alloy wheels with usable tyres, a clean set of body panels or an engine with a known service history are all worth more reused than melted. That is where the difference between a bare metal price and a good quote lives. It also explains why we ask about running condition, mileage and MOT status. A car that starts and drives is easier to move and more likely to have parts worth pulling before depollution. #### Subtract the cost of getting to you Collection has a real cost: driver time, fuel, and whether the job needs a transporter rather than a van. Because we run our own fleet across Scotland from the Fife depot rather than subcontracting, that cost stays inside the quote instead of becoming a fee added at the door. A car in a city street with easy access is cheaper to collect than one in a rear court up a farm track. Both get collected free, but distance and access do influence the figure we can offer. #### Sense-check the quote you are given Ask three questions of any buyer. Is collection included with no fee. Is the price the price, or a starting figure subject to inspection. Are they a licensed authorised treatment facility who will issue a Certificate of Destruction. If the answer to any of those is vague, the headline number is not the number you will be paid. Key takeaways: - Weight times the per-tonne steel rate is the backbone of every scrap quote. - Reusable parts, especially the catalytic converter, lift the price above bare metal. - Rates move with the commodity market, so quotes are only valid for a short window. - Free collection and a Certificate of Destruction should never be optional extras. ### Why scrap car quotes differ so much between buyers URL: https://scrapacarscotland.com/blog/why-scrap-car-quotes-differ Category: Prices Published: 2026-07-14 Last reviewed: 2026-07-14 **Short answer:** Scrap car quotes differ because buyers use different scrap metal contracts, some collect with their own fleet while others subcontract, and some quote high to secure the booking then reduce the price on collection. Always confirm whether the quote includes free collection, has no admin fee, and is guaranteed rather than subject to inspection. It is normal to ring three buyers and get three prices with a hundred pounds between them. Some of that spread is legitimate. Some of it is a sales tactic, and knowing the difference saves an unpleasant conversation on the driveway. #### Legitimate reasons the price varies Different treatment facilities have different contracts with the mills that buy their processed steel, and those contracts are renegotiated at different times. A buyer on last month's rate can genuinely offer more or less than one on this month's. Location matters too. A buyer with a depot forty miles from you has a shorter run than one routing a subcontractor across the country, and that difference lands in the quote. Parts demand is the third factor. A buyer who has a customer waiting for your exact engine can pay more than one who will simply shred the car. #### The deductions to watch for Admin or paperwork fees taken from the agreed price. Collection charges introduced once the driver arrives. A re-quote on the grounds that a wheel is missing, the car has more rust than described, or the catalytic converter has been removed. Some of those are fair if the car genuinely is not as described. The warning sign is a buyer who quotes noticeably above everyone else, then finds a reason to come down to roughly the market price once your car is already on the truck. #### Subcontracted collection changes everything Many national scrap websites are lead brokers. They take your details, sell the job to a local operator, and take a cut. The operator who turns up has to make their margin out of whatever is left, which is often where the renegotiation starts. We collect with our own trucks and drivers, so the person who quotes you and the person who pays you work for the same business. #### Questions that expose a soft quote Is this price guaranteed subject only to the car being as I described it. Who is collecting, you or a third party. Is payment made before the car leaves. Will I get a Certificate of Destruction from your own licence. Straight answers to those four questions are worth more than twenty pounds on the headline figure. Key takeaways: - Some price variation is genuine: metal contracts, distance and parts demand. - Suspiciously high quotes are often reduced at collection. - Broker sites subcontract, which creates room for renegotiation. - Guaranteed price, own fleet, payment before departure, Certificate of Destruction. ### Is my car worth more scrapped or sold for parts? URL: https://scrapacarscotland.com/blog/scrap-or-sell-for-parts Category: Prices Published: 2026-07-21 Last reviewed: 2026-07-21 **Short answer:** Selling a car for parts usually only beats scrapping it when the vehicle is a popular model with in-demand components, you have somewhere to store and strip it, and you are willing to spend weeks listing and posting items. For most owners the net gain after time, storage and disposal of the shell is smaller than it first looks. Breaking a car for parts genuinely can return more than a scrap quote. The mistake is comparing the gross value of the parts against the scrap price and stopping there. Here is the comparison with all the costs included, so you can make the call with real numbers. #### When breaking makes sense The car is a common model still on the road in numbers, so there is a live market for the parts. Popular hatchbacks, older diesel estates and enthusiast models fit this pattern. The valuable items are intact: engine and gearbox with known history, ECU, alloy wheels, doors and panels in a common colour, infotainment head unit, and a catalytic converter that has not been cut off. You have a garage or driveway you can lose to a stripped shell for a couple of months, and the tools to remove parts safely. #### The costs people forget Storage. A part-stripped car cannot sit on a public road, and fluid leaks onto a driveway are your problem. Time. Photographing, listing, answering messages, packing and posting is genuinely dozens of hours across the sale of a full car's worth of parts. Disposal. Once the good bits are gone you still have a shell to get rid of, and a stripped car is worth far less than a complete one because the parts that carried value have gone. Legal duty. You cannot simply dump the remains. It still has to reach an authorised treatment facility and the DVLA still needs notifying. #### A realistic worked comparison Take a common family hatchback with a scrap quote in the low hundreds. Broken carefully it might return two to three times that gross across ten or fifteen part sales, spread over two to three months, minus postage and listing fees, minus the reduced value of the shell at the end. Divide the net gain by the hours spent and most people conclude the difference is not paying them well. If you enjoy the work, that changes the maths in a way a spreadsheet cannot capture. #### The middle option You do not have to choose all or nothing. Removing a private registration, a recent set of tyres, a towbar or an aftermarket stereo before collection is quick and sensible. What you should not remove is the catalytic converter, battery or wheels, because those are priced into the quote and taking them off reduces what we can pay. Key takeaways: - Breaking pays best on common models with intact, in-demand parts. - Storage, time and shell disposal wipe out much of the headline gain. - A stripped shell is worth far less than a complete car. - Removing a private plate or aftermarket extras before collection is fine, the cat and battery are not. ### Cancelling road tax and insurance after scrapping: the exact order URL: https://scrapacarscotland.com/blog/cancel-road-tax-and-insurance-after-scrapping Category: DVLA & paperwork Published: 2026-07-28 Last reviewed: 2026-07-28 **Short answer:** After scrapping, notify the DVLA that the vehicle has gone to an authorised treatment facility first. The DVLA then automatically refunds full remaining months of road tax and cancels any direct debit. Only cancel your insurance once the car has physically been collected and the DVLA has been told, so you are never liable for an uninsured vehicle you still own. The paperwork after scrapping is short, but the order matters. Cancel insurance too early and you are running an uninsured vehicle on your driveway. Forget the DVLA and you keep paying tax on a car that no longer exists. #### Step one: hand over the right part of the V5C When the car is collected, give the driver the yellow section of the V5C, the part headed for a motor trader, insurer or dismantler. Keep the rest of the document. If you have lost the V5C entirely the car can still be scrapped, but you must notify the DVLA in writing instead. #### Step two: notify the DVLA Tell the DVLA the vehicle has gone to an authorised treatment facility. This can be done online and takes a couple of minutes. The treatment facility also reports the destruction, but the seller notification is your protection and your trigger for the tax refund. You should receive an acknowledgement. Keep it. It is the evidence that liability for the vehicle ended on that date. #### Step three: the road tax refund is automatic You do not apply separately. Once the DVLA processes the notification, any full remaining months of tax are refunded by cheque to the registered keeper at the address on record, and any direct debit is cancelled. Part months are not refunded, which is worth knowing if your renewal date is a few days away. Two things to check: that your address on the V5C is current, and that the cheque goes to the name of the registered keeper. #### Step four: cancel the insurance last Only once the car is physically gone and the DVLA has been notified should you call your insurer. Cancel the policy or transfer it to a replacement vehicle. Ask about a pro-rata refund and whether a cancellation fee applies. If you are mid-policy with no claims, transferring rather than cancelling usually protects your no claims discount better. #### Step five: file the Certificate of Destruction Your Certificate of Destruction is issued by the authorised treatment facility, normally within a few days. It is your proof the vehicle was legally destroyed and can no longer be reused on the road. Keep it with the DVLA acknowledgement. Between them they close out every liability attached to the vehicle. Key takeaways: - DVLA first, insurance last. Never the other way round. - The tax refund is automatic once the DVLA is notified, for full months only. - Check your V5C address is current or the refund cheque goes to the wrong place. - Keep the DVLA acknowledgement and the Certificate of Destruction together. ### Failed its MOT: repair, sell or scrap? URL: https://scrapacarscotland.com/blog/mot-failure-repair-sell-or-scrap Category: Scrapping guide Published: 2026-08-04 Last reviewed: 2026-08-04 **Short answer:** Repair an MOT failure when the total quoted cost is comfortably below the car's post-repair market value and the vehicle is otherwise sound. Scrap it when repair costs approach or exceed that value, when the failure is structural corrosion, or when a passed MOT would only buy a few months before the next major bill. An MOT failure sheet is not a verdict, it is a quote request. The decision that follows is simple arithmetic once you separate the cheap items from the expensive ones. #### Failures that are usually worth fixing Bulbs, wipers, washer jets, tyres, brake pads and discs, worn bushes, a snapped spring, an exhaust section, a sticking handbrake cable. These are routine consumables and the parts are inexpensive on most mainstream cars. If your failure sheet is a list of these and the body is solid, repairing is almost always the right call. #### Failures that usually end a car Structural corrosion in prescribed areas such as sills, chassis rails, suspension mounting points and floor pan. Welding is skilled work, the cost is open-ended until the grinder goes in, and where you find one rotten section you generally find more. Serious emissions failures on an older diesel, especially a failed DPF or catalytic converter, where the part alone can exceed the car's value. Automatic gearbox or engine failure discovered alongside the MOT. Rebuild costs on a car worth under a thousand pounds rarely make sense. #### The decision rule Get the full repair quote, not a partial one. Then find the realistic private sale value of the same car with a fresh MOT, using live listings rather than optimistic valuation tools. If repairs cost more than around half that value, and the car is over ten years old, you are usually spending money to defer a decision rather than to fix a problem. If repairs are a small fraction of the value, fix it. The second question matters as much: what is the next likely bill. A car that passes today with a tired clutch and a weeping head gasket has not been saved, only postponed. #### If you decide to scrap A car that has failed its MOT cannot legally be driven to us except to a pre-arranged repair or test appointment, so collection is the practical route. We collect non-runners and failures across Scotland at no cost. Do not spend money on repairs before scrapping. Fixing faults does not increase a scrap quote in any meaningful way, because the value is in weight and reusable parts, not roadworthiness. Key takeaways: - Consumable failures are cheap and usually worth repairing. - Structural corrosion and major emissions failures normally end a car economically. - Compare full repair cost against realistic post-MOT market value, not a valuation tool. - Never repair a car you intend to scrap, it does not raise the quote. ### Scrapping a non-runner: how collection works when the car will not start URL: https://scrapacarscotland.com/blog/scrapping-a-non-runner Category: Scrapping guide Published: 2026-08-11 Last reviewed: 2026-08-11 **Short answer:** A car that will not start is collected on a recovery truck or transporter with a winch, so it does not need to drive, steer under power or have working brakes. We need clear access to the front or rear of the vehicle, roughly a car length of pulling space, and the wheels able to roll or be skated. There is no extra charge for a non-runner. Most of the vehicles we collect do not start. It is the normal case, not the exception, and it does not reduce the price or add a fee. What does matter is access, because a winch needs a straight pull and a transporter needs somewhere to park. #### What the recovery vehicle actually needs A straight line to the front or rear of the car, and about a car length of space to draw it out. The bed tilts, the winch takes the strain, and the car comes up under cable rather than under its own power. The wheels need to rotate or be capable of being skated. Seized brakes and flat tyres are routine and handled on the day. A car with a wheel missing entirely is worth mentioning when you book so the right truck comes. #### No keys, no problem, with one condition We regularly collect vehicles with no keys at all. The car is winched with the steering lock engaged, which is why the straight pull matters more than usual. The condition is proof you are entitled to dispose of the vehicle. The V5C in your name is the cleanest evidence. Without keys and without a V5C we will ask a few extra questions before booking. #### Awkward locations Rear courts, shared car parks, farm tracks, garages with a low door, permit-only bays and steep Scottish driveways are all doable, but only if we know in advance. Tell us when you book and we send the vehicle that fits. Inside a garage is usually fine if there is space to hook a cable and roll the car out. Behind two other cars is not, so please move them before the driver arrives. #### Cars that have not moved for years Long-term stationary vehicles often have sunken tyres, seized brakes and a body settled into gravel or grass. Drivers deal with this constantly using skates and the winch. Be aware that fluids may have leaked underneath over the years. Mention it if you have seen staining so the driver can bring absorbent and leave the ground clean. Key takeaways: - Non-runners are collected on a winch, no engine, brakes or steering needed. - Straight access and a car length of pulling room is the main requirement. - No keys is fine, proof of entitlement to scrap the vehicle is not optional. - Flag tight access, missing wheels and long-term parked cars when you book. ### Insurance write-off categories S and N explained URL: https://scrapacarscotland.com/blog/category-s-and-n-write-offs-explained Category: DVLA & paperwork Published: 2026-08-18 Last reviewed: 2026-08-18 **Short answer:** Category A and B write-offs must be destroyed and can never return to the road, with Category B allowing salvageable parts to be reclaimed before the shell is crushed. Category S is structurally damaged but legally repairable, and Category N is non-structural damage that is also repairable. Only S and N vehicles can be sold on or driven again once properly repaired. Write-off categories describe what may legally happen to a damaged vehicle, not simply how bad the damage looked. Getting the category right determines whether you are choosing between repair and sale, or whether the law has already made the decision for you. #### Category A: destruction only The entire vehicle must be crushed. Nothing may be reclaimed, not even undamaged parts, and the shell cannot be resold. Severe fire and flood damage typically lands here. A Category A vehicle can only go to an authorised treatment facility for full destruction with a Certificate of Destruction issued. #### Category B: body shell destroyed, parts may be reclaimed The bodyshell must be crushed and can never return to the road, but serviceable parts may legally be removed and reused first. As with Category A, disposal must be through a licensed facility and the destruction recorded. #### Category S: structural damage, repairable S means damage to the structural frame, chassis or crumple zones. The car is repairable and can legally return to the road, but the repair is specialist work and the category stays on the vehicle record permanently. Insurers often write these off because professional repair costs exceed the vehicle's value, not because the car is beyond saving. If you keep the car after settlement, you own something with a permanently reduced market value. #### Category N: non-structural damage, repairable N covers damage outside the structural frame: panels, lights, bumpers, electrics, sometimes brakes or steering components. The car is repairable and roadworthy once fixed. Older cars frequently become Category N over cosmetic damage alone, because a couple of panels and a paint job can exceed the value of a fifteen-year-old hatchback. #### What to do if you keep the salvage Insurers sometimes settle and let you retain the vehicle for a reduced payout. If it is Category A or B your only lawful route is destruction at an authorised treatment facility. If it is S or N you can repair it, sell it as salvage, or scrap it. We collect all four categories across Scotland and issue a Certificate of Destruction where the vehicle is being destroyed. Tell us the category when you book so the paperwork is right first time. Key takeaways: - A and B can never return to the road. B allows parts to be reclaimed first. - S is structural but repairable. N is non-structural and repairable. - The category stays on the vehicle record permanently and cuts resale value. - Tell your scrap buyer the category up front so the paperwork matches. ### Scrapping a vehicle after the owner has died URL: https://scrapacarscotland.com/blog/scrapping-an-inherited-vehicle Category: DVLA & paperwork Published: 2026-08-25 Last reviewed: 2026-08-25 **Short answer:** A vehicle belonging to someone who has died can be scrapped by the executor or the next of kin dealing with the estate. Notify the DVLA of the death so the record is updated, then arrange collection with an authorised treatment facility. The V5C helps but is not essential, and the Certificate of Destruction is issued to whoever authorises the disposal. Clearing a family member's estate is a difficult time to be dealing with paperwork. The vehicle part is one of the simpler items, and it can usually be handled in a single phone call and one collection. #### Who can authorise the disposal The executor named in the will, the administrator appointed where there is no will, or the next of kin handling the estate informally where the estate is small. You do not need to transfer the vehicle into your own name first in order to scrap it. Transferring adds a step and a delay without changing the outcome. #### Telling the DVLA The DVLA needs to know the registered keeper has died so the record is updated and any tax direct debit is stopped. In Scotland this can be handled through the Tell Us Once service the registrar offers when the death is registered, which notifies several government departments at the same time. If Tell Us Once was not used, write to the DVLA with the vehicle details and a copy of the death certificate. #### What to do about the V5C If you have the V5C, keep it and hand the yellow section to the driver at collection, exactly as a normal scrapping. If the document cannot be found, that is common and not a barrier. We can still collect. You may be asked for the registration, your relationship to the deceased and confirmation that you are dealing with the estate. #### Practical points on the day Check the car thoroughly before collection. Personal items, documents, photographs and small valuables turn up in gloveboxes and boots more often than you would expect, and nothing can be recovered once the vehicle is processed. Payment is made to the person authorising the collection, and should be accounted for as an estate asset. Our drivers deal with these collections regularly and will handle it discreetly. Key takeaways: - The executor or next of kin can authorise scrapping without transferring the V5C. - Use Tell Us Once at the registrar, or write to the DVLA with the death certificate. - A missing V5C does not prevent collection. - Search the car properly, sale proceeds form part of the estate. ### How much does it cost to scrap a car in Scotland? URL: https://scrapacarscotland.com/blog/how-much-does-it-cost-to-scrap-a-car Category: Prices Published: 2026-09-01 Last reviewed: 2026-09-01 **Short answer:** Scrapping a car in Scotland costs nothing. An authorised treatment facility pays you for the vehicle and collects it free, and the Certificate of Destruction is issued at no charge. Admin fees, paperwork fees and collection charges are not legitimate. The only real costs are cancelling your insurance and reclaiming any unused road tax. People search for the cost of scrapping a car because they assume disposal is something you pay for, like a skip or a fridge. It is the other way round. An end-of-life vehicle has value in its metal and its parts, so the money flows to you. The confusion comes from operators who quote a price and then claw part of it back with fees on the day. #### What you should be paid A complete car in average condition is worth a few hundred pounds, driven mostly by weight and by which parts can be reused. A large diesel estate or a van sits at the higher end, a small hatchback with no catalytic converter at the lower end. The figure quoted should be the figure paid, by bank transfer, at the point the vehicle is loaded. Ask for the quote to carry an expiry date so both sides know where they stand while metal prices move. #### Charges that are never legitimate Collection fees. A licensed operator collecting in its own coverage area does not charge for uplift. Admin or paperwork fees. The Certificate of Destruction is issued to the DVLA electronically and costs the operator nothing. DVLA notification fees. Telling the DVLA is free, and it is the operator's legal duty, not an optional extra. On-the-day renegotiation for a fault you already declared. If the driver's number is lower than the quote for no new reason, you can refuse and send them away. #### The three costs people forget Insurance. Cancelling mid-term can attract a cancellation fee from the insurer, though you should get a refund of unused premium. Do it after the car is collected, not before. Road tax. You are refunded full remaining months automatically once the DVLA is notified, but part-months are lost, so scrapping early in a tax month wastes less. Getting home. If the car is a runner and you are driving it somewhere, you need a lift back. Free collection avoids this entirely. #### When scrapping might genuinely cost you Outstanding finance. A car on HP or PCP is not yours to scrap until the agreement is settled. Settle first, then scrap. A vehicle stranded somewhere with difficult or paid access, such as a private car park charging for release. That charge is between you and the site owner. Key takeaways: - Scrapping costs nothing, you are paid for the vehicle. - Collection, admin and DVLA fees are never legitimate deductions. - Cancel insurance after collection, not before. - Settle any outstanding finance before scrapping. ### Scrap car collection: how free uplift actually works URL: https://scrapacarscotland.com/blog/scrap-car-collection-explained Category: Scrapping guide Published: 2026-09-02 Last reviewed: 2026-09-02 **Short answer:** Scrap car collection means a licensed operator sends a transporter to your address, loads the vehicle, pays you by bank transfer and notifies the DVLA. It is free across our coverage area, takes around fifteen minutes on site, and works for non-runners as well as driveable cars. Collection is the part people worry about most, usually because of access. In practice it is the quickest stage of the whole process. #### Booking the slot Once you accept a quote we agree a date and a window. Central Belt, Fife, Tayside and the Lothians are routine daily runs, so same-day or next-day is common. More remote addresses get a longer window rather than a lower price. You do not need to take a full day off. The driver calls ahead when he is on the way. #### Access, and why we ask about it Tell us honestly where the car sits: kerbside, driveway, locked car park, tenement back court, farm track, multi-storey. It determines which vehicle we send, not the price. A non-runner is fine. Winching a car with seized brakes or no wheels is normal work. What causes a wasted visit is a car boxed in by other vehicles or behind a gate nobody can open. #### On the day Have the keys, the V5C if you have it, and photo ID to hand. Strip the car of personal items first, including the boot, glovebox, sun visor and under the seats. The driver checks the vehicle matches what was described, you hand over the yellow section of the V5C, payment is made by bank transfer while he is with you, and the car is loaded. Fifteen minutes is typical. #### Afterwards The DVLA is notified electronically and your Certificate of Destruction follows, normally within a few working days. Once you have it, cancel the insurance and check that your road tax refund has been issued. Key takeaways: - Collection is free and usually takes about fifteen minutes on site. - Non-runners and awkward access are routine, just describe them accurately. - Payment is made by bank transfer before the car leaves. - The Certificate of Destruction follows within a few working days. ### Car breakers, scrap yards and ATFs: what is the difference? URL: https://scrapacarscotland.com/blog/car-breakers-vs-scrap-yards Category: Scrapping guide Published: 2026-09-03 Last reviewed: 2026-09-03 **Short answer:** A car breaker dismantles vehicles to resell parts. A scrap yard processes metal. An authorised treatment facility is licensed by SEPA to depollute end-of-life vehicles and is the only type that can issue a Certificate of Destruction. Many businesses are more than one of these at once. Search for somewhere to get rid of a car and you will be offered breakers, scrap yards, salvage dealers, dismantlers and recyclers. The distinction that actually matters legally is whether the site holds an authorised treatment facility licence. #### Car breakers and dismantlers A breaker strips usable parts, tests them and sells them on: engines, gearboxes, body panels, lights, alternators. If you are buying a part for an older car this is where it comes from, and it is why a mechanically sound car that failed on rust is worth more than a shell. Breaking a car is not, by itself, the same as legally destroying it. The paperwork depends on the licence the site holds. #### Scrap metal yards A metal yard buys material by weight: steel, aluminium, copper, brass. Some accept vehicles, many do not, and those that do may not be licensed for depollution. Under the Scrap Metal Dealers Act it is illegal to pay cash for scrap metal, including vehicles. Any yard offering you notes for a car is not operating legally, and you have no proof of disposal. #### Authorised treatment facilities An ATF is licensed by SEPA in Scotland to remove fuel, oil, coolant, brake fluid, batteries, airbags and tyres before the shell is processed. It is the only category permitted to notify the DVLA of destruction and issue a Certificate of Destruction. If a buyer cannot tell you their ATF status, the vehicle stays your legal responsibility, along with anything later done with the registration. #### Which do you actually want? You want the whole car gone, paid for and off your record: an ATF with free collection. You want maximum value from a car with strong reusable parts: a breaker will factor that into the offer, and a good ATF is often also a breaker. You are selling loose metal or a shell you have already stripped: a metal yard, by weight, bank transfer only. Key takeaways: - Only an authorised treatment facility can issue a Certificate of Destruction. - Cash payment for a scrap vehicle is illegal in the UK. - Breakers pay for reusable parts, metal yards pay for weight. - Ask for ATF status before agreeing to anything. ### Cash for scrap cars: why nobody should be handing you notes URL: https://scrapacarscotland.com/blog/cash-for-scrap-cars-the-law Category: Scrapping guide Published: 2026-09-04 Last reviewed: 2026-09-04 **Short answer:** Paying cash for scrap vehicles has been illegal across the UK since the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013. Licensed operators must pay by bank transfer or cheque so every transaction is traceable. A buyer offering cash is either unlicensed or breaking the law, and you get no proof the car was legally destroyed. Cash for cars is still the phrase everyone uses, and it is still what a lot of adverts promise. The law changed more than a decade ago and the adverts did not. #### What the law says The Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013 bans cash payment for scrap metal, including end-of-life vehicles, and requires dealers to be licensed by the local authority and to verify the seller's identity. It exists to make vehicle theft and untraceable disposal harder. The side effect for honest sellers is a written record that the car left your hands on a specific date for a specific sum. #### Why it protects you, not just the dealer A bank transfer proves you were paid. The Certificate of Destruction proves the car was destroyed. Together they close off any later dispute about fines, parking charges or the registration reappearing on the road. With cash and a handshake you have neither, and the DVLA still has you down as the keeper. #### Spotting an unlicensed buyer Cash offered up front. No ATF licence number when asked. No ID check. No mention of a Certificate of Destruction. A price that is far above everyone else, then reduced on the driveway. Anyone who wants to take the car without seeing your ID is not intending to register the disposal properly. Key takeaways: - Cash for scrap vehicles is illegal in the UK. - Payment must be by bank transfer or cheque, with ID checked. - The transfer plus the Certificate of Destruction is your protection. - No ATF number, no ID check, no deal. ### Car scrappage schemes in Scotland: what is actually available URL: https://scrapacarscotland.com/blog/car-scrappage-schemes-scotland Category: Prices Published: 2026-09-05 Last reviewed: 2026-09-05 **Short answer:** There is no national government car scrappage scheme in the UK today. What exists in Scotland is manufacturer trade-in allowances on new cars, occasional low emission zone support for households and businesses, and the open market value an authorised treatment facility pays for the vehicle itself. Scrappage still means the 2009 government scheme to a lot of people, when £2,000 came off a new car for anything over ten years old. That ended in 2010 and has never returned nationally. #### Manufacturer trade-in offers Several manufacturers run their own scrappage-style promotions, typically a fixed allowance against a new or nearly new car when you trade in something old. Read what the allowance replaces. It is often instead of, not on top of, the discount you would have negotiated anyway, and the old car is usually worth more sold to an ATF separately. Compare the two routes before signing. #### Low emission zone support Scotland's LEZs in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Dundee and Aberdeen are enforced, and support funding for households and small businesses to dispose of non-compliant vehicles has run in phases through Energy Saving Trust rather than continuously. Check current availability before assuming it applies to you, and note that a car being non-compliant does not reduce its scrap value. #### What your car is worth without any scheme A complete vehicle collected by an ATF has a market value based on weight and reusable parts, paid to you by bank transfer with no fees. For most older cars that is a straightforward few hundred pounds, and it is available today rather than conditional on buying something else. #### How to decide If you are buying a new car anyway, get the dealer's best price without the trade-in, then get a scrap quote, and compare that combined figure to the scrappage offer. If you are not buying anything, a scrappage scheme is irrelevant and a straight scrap quote is the whole answer. Key takeaways: - No national government scrappage scheme currently exists. - Manufacturer offers often replace the discount you would have got anyway. - LEZ support funding runs in phases, check before relying on it. - Compare dealer best price plus scrap value against any scrappage deal. ### How to scrap a car in Scotland: the complete step-by-step guide URL: https://scrapacarscotland.com/blog/how-to-scrap-a-car Category: Scrapping guide Published: 2026-09-06 Last reviewed: 2026-09-06 **Short answer:** To scrap a car in Scotland: get a quote from an authorised treatment facility, agree a collection time, hand over the vehicle with your V5C if you have it, receive payment by bank transfer, and make sure the DVLA is notified so you get a Certificate of Destruction. The whole process usually takes a few days and collection is free. Scrapping a car is a five-minute job for you and a legal process for the people collecting it. Done properly, you get paid by bank transfer, the DVLA is told the vehicle is off the road, and you receive a Certificate of Destruction proving it. Done badly, you can end up with the car still registered in your name months later, parking fines arriving for a vehicle you no longer have, and no proof it was ever destroyed. This guide is the process in order, with the one step that matters most flagged clearly. #### Step 1: Check the car is actually ready to scrap Before anything else, decide the car really is at end of life rather than worth more sold or repaired. As a rule of thumb, if the repair estimate is close to or above what the car would sell for fixed, scrapping is usually the right call. Remove everything personal: paperwork, sunglasses, tools, child seats, house keys on the ring, and the contents of the boot. Check under the seats. Once the car is loaded and gone, recovering items is difficult. If there is outstanding finance on the car, it is not legally yours to scrap. Settle the finance first. #### Step 2: Get a genuine quote Only deal with an authorised treatment facility (ATF) or a collector working with one. An ATF is licensed by SEPA in Scotland to depollute and process end-of-life vehicles, and only an ATF can issue a Certificate of Destruction. A real quote is based on the registration, make, model, condition, whether it runs, and your postcode. Be accurate about condition: a price quoted for a complete car will not stand if the engine or wheels are missing when the truck arrives. The quote should be free, the collection should be free, and payment should be by bank transfer. Cash payment for a scrap car has been illegal in Scotland since 2013 under the Air Weapons and Licensing (Scotland) Act, so anyone offering cash is operating outside the law and so would you be. #### Step 3: Agree collection and prepare the car Collection is normally arranged within a day or two, and the vehicle does not need to run, have an MOT, or be taxed. Non-runners, accident damaged cars and MOT failures are collected every day. Have ready: the V5C log book if you have it, photo ID, and the bank details you want payment sent to. If the car is parked somewhere awkward, on a drive with no access or with flat tyres, mention it when booking so the right vehicle is sent. No V5C is not a blocker. You can still scrap the car with photo ID and proof of address, and you then notify the DVLA yourself in writing with the vehicle registration, make and model, the date, and the name and address of the facility that took it. #### Step 4: Collection day and payment On arrival, the driver checks the vehicle matches what was quoted. If it does, the price stands. The vehicle is loaded, and payment is made by bank transfer, normally same day or next working day. You should be given a receipt or written confirmation of the collection on the spot. Keep it with the date and the collector's details until your Certificate of Destruction arrives. If a collector tries to renegotiate the price on the doorstep for reasons that were clear in the quote, you are entitled to refuse and walk away. It costs you nothing to get another quote. #### Step 5: DVLA notification and the Certificate of Destruction This is the step that protects you. When an ATF destroys the vehicle, it notifies the DVLA and issues a Certificate of Destruction (CoD). This is your legal proof the car no longer exists and ends your responsibility for it. If you have the V5C, fill in the section for selling or transferring to a motor trader or dismantler (section 9 on older V5Cs, section 4 on the newer style) and send it to the DVLA, or confirm the ATF has done it electronically. Keep the CoD forever. If any fine, tax demand or query about the car ever appears after this point, the certificate ends the conversation. #### Step 6: Cancel tax and insurance, claim refunds Once the DVLA records the car as scrapped, any full months of remaining vehicle tax are refunded automatically by cheque to the registered keeper's address. You do not need to apply, but make sure your V5C address is current. Cancel your insurance yourself; it does not stop automatically. If you paid annually you will normally get a pro-rata refund, minus any admin fee. Private number plates must be retained on a V778 or transferred to another vehicle BEFORE the car is scrapped. Once a Certificate of Destruction is issued, the registration is gone with the car. #### How long the whole thing takes For most people in Scotland the timeline is: quote today, collection within 24 to 72 hours, payment the same day or next working day, CoD within days of the vehicle being processed, and the tax refund following from the DVLA. The entire active effort from you is about fifteen minutes: one quote form, one phone call, and handing over the keys. #### The mistakes that cause problems later The three issues we see most: accepting cash (illegal, and leaves you with no paper trail), handing the car over without any receipt, and never confirming the DVLA was notified so the car stays in your name. If weeks pass with no Certificate of Destruction, chase the collector and check the vehicle's status with the DVLA. A legitimate ATF will resolve it quickly because the certificate is part of their licence to operate. Key takeaways: - Use an authorised treatment facility; only an ATF can issue a Certificate of Destruction. - Collection is free, the vehicle does not need to run, and payment is by bank transfer, never cash. - No V5C is fine: photo ID and proof of address, then notify the DVLA in writing yourself. - Retain a private plate before scrapping; it cannot be recovered afterwards. - The Certificate of Destruction is the document that ends your responsibility. Keep it. ## Regional hubs ### Greater Glasgow URL: https://scrapacarscotland.com/scrap-car-collection/greater-glasgow Greater Glasgow is our busiest collection area by a distance. Between the Low Emission Zone pushing older diesels off the road and the sheer density of tenement parking, we lift more cars from the G postcodes than anywhere else in Scotland. Tell us if the car sits in a shared back court, on a permit bay or behind a locked gate. Glasgow access problems are the single biggest cause of a failed lift, and they are all solvable if we know before the truck is dispatched. ### South Lanarkshire URL: https://scrapacarscotland.com/scrap-car-collection/lanarkshire South Lanarkshire towns sit on our standing west-of-Scotland route, so Hamilton, East Kilbride and the surrounding ML and G7 postcodes are usually collected within a day or two of the quote being agreed. A lot of Lanarkshire work is second family cars that have finally failed an MOT rather than genuine wrecks, so it is worth asking about a salvage price before you settle for scrap weight. ### North Lanarkshire URL: https://scrapacarscotland.com/scrap-car-collection/north-lanarkshire North Lanarkshire covers Cumbernauld, Coatbridge and the corridor between Glasgow and Falkirk. It is a short hop from the M80 and M8, which is why collection here is one of the quickest turnarounds we run. New town estates in Cumbernauld often have rear parking courts with narrow entries. Mention it on the call and we will send a smaller recovery unit rather than the full transporter. ### Renfrewshire URL: https://scrapacarscotland.com/scrap-car-collection/renfrewshire Renfrewshire collections run alongside our Glasgow route, covering Paisley and the PA postcodes west of the city with the same free collection and same-day payment. Airport-area parking and long-stay vehicles are common here. If the car has been sitting unmoved for months with flat tyres, say so and we will bring skates rather than a winch alone. ### West Dunbartonshire URL: https://scrapacarscotland.com/scrap-car-collection/west-dunbartonshire West Dunbartonshire runs from Clydebank out along the north bank of the Clyde. The G81 and G82 postcodes are covered on our regular north Glasgow run. Riverside and older tenement streets here are tight for a full transporter, so most West Dunbartonshire lifts are done on a single-vehicle recovery truck. ### Inverclyde URL: https://scrapacarscotland.com/scrap-car-collection/inverclyde Inverclyde is served on a planned run out to Greenock and Port Glasgow rather than individual trips, which is how we keep paying a full price this far west without docking the quote for mileage. The hill streets above Greenock are steep and often single-track. A quick note about the gradient when you book saves a wasted visit. ### Ayrshire URL: https://scrapacarscotland.com/scrap-car-collection/ayrshire Ayrshire covers Ayr, Kilmarnock and Irvine across the KA postcodes. Coastal salt air means we see more structurally corroded shells here than almost anywhere else on our patch. Corrosion does not reduce what we pay. Price is set on weight and reusable parts, so a rotten sill makes no difference to the quote. ### Fife URL: https://scrapacarscotland.com/scrap-car-collection/fife Fife is home ground. Our licensed yard is at Thornton, so Kirkcaldy, Glenrothes, Dunfermline and St Andrews are almost always same-day or next-day collections. Because the yard is local, Fife customers are welcome to drive the car in themselves if it is still roadworthy, which usually adds a little to the price. ### Central Scotland URL: https://scrapacarscotland.com/scrap-car-collection/central Central Scotland covers Stirling, Falkirk and Alloa - the belt between Glasgow and Fife that our trucks cross most days on the way to somewhere else. Because our transporters already pass through daily, Central collections can often be slotted in at short notice, including late afternoon. ### The Lothians URL: https://scrapacarscotland.com/scrap-car-collection/lothians The Lothians cover Edinburgh's eastern commuter towns including Musselburgh and the EH coastal belt, all reachable from Fife over the Queensferry Crossing in well under an hour. Resident permit bays are the usual complication. We can work around them, but we need the exact street and bay type before the driver sets off. ### West Lothian URL: https://scrapacarscotland.com/scrap-car-collection/west-lothian West Lothian centres on Livingston and the EH52 to EH54 postcodes, sitting neatly between Edinburgh and Falkirk on our daily central run. Livingston's estate layouts have plenty of shared parking courts. If there is a height barrier at the entrance, tell us and we will plan the lift from the road instead. ### Tayside URL: https://scrapacarscotland.com/scrap-car-collection/tayside Tayside takes in Dundee, Perth and Arbroath. It is a straight run north from the yard, so prices here match what we pay in Fife rather than being trimmed for distance. Dundee multi-storey and undercroft parking needs headroom for the recovery unit. Mention the parking setup when you book and we will send a low-clearance truck. ### North East Scotland URL: https://scrapacarscotland.com/scrap-car-collection/north-east The North East covers Aberdeen and Peterhead across the AB postcodes. Offshore rotas mean plenty of cars up here sit unused for months and end up scrapped rather than sold. If you are offshore or away when we collect, we can complete the paperwork and payment with a nominated person as long as ID and the V5C line up. ### Moray URL: https://scrapacarscotland.com/scrap-car-collection/moray Moray collections centre on Elgin and the IV30 to IV32 postcodes, handled on our scheduled northern route up the A96. Rural Moray addresses are often farm or steading collections. A grid reference or what3words location saves the driver a lot of time. ### The Highlands URL: https://scrapacarscotland.com/scrap-car-collection/highlands The Highlands are served from Inverness outward on planned runs. Most scrap buyers quietly refuse this far north or deduct heavily for mileage - we do neither. Highland collections are scheduled rather than on-demand, so booking a few days ahead gets you a firm slot instead of a rough window. ### Dumfries and Galloway URL: https://scrapacarscotland.com/scrap-car-collection/dumfries-and-galloway Dumfries and Galloway is covered on a planned southern route through the DG postcodes, taking in Dumfries and the surrounding villages on the same trip. Long single-track approaches are normal here. If the vehicle is up a farm track or in a yard, we will send the 4x4-capable recovery unit. ### The Scottish Borders URL: https://scrapacarscotland.com/scrap-car-collection/borders The Scottish Borders are run as a planned route through Galashiels, Selkirk and Hawick rather than individual trips, which is how we keep serving an area most buyers skip. Farm and field collections are routine in the Borders. Tell us about the ground conditions and we will match the truck to the track.
