# Cancelling road tax and insurance after scrapping: the exact order

The paperwork after scrapping is short, but the order matters. Cancel insurance too early and you are running an uninsured vehicle on your driveway. Forget the DVLA and you keep paying tax on a car that no longer exists.

## Step one: hand over the right part of the V5C

When the car is collected, give the driver the yellow section of the V5C, the part headed for a motor trader, insurer or dismantler. Keep the rest of the document.
If you have lost the V5C entirely the car can still be scrapped, but you must notify the DVLA in writing instead.

## Step two: notify the DVLA

Tell the DVLA the vehicle has gone to an authorised treatment facility. This can be done online and takes a couple of minutes. The treatment facility also reports the destruction, but the seller notification is your protection and your trigger for the tax refund.
You should receive an acknowledgement. Keep it. It is the evidence that liability for the vehicle ended on that date.

## Step three: the road tax refund is automatic

You do not apply separately. Once the DVLA processes the notification, any full remaining months of tax are refunded by cheque to the registered keeper at the address on record, and any direct debit is cancelled.
Part months are not refunded, which is worth knowing if your renewal date is a few days away. Two things to check: that your address on the V5C is current, and that the cheque goes to the name of the registered keeper.

## Step four: cancel the insurance last

Only once the car is physically gone and the DVLA has been notified should you call your insurer. Cancel the policy or transfer it to a replacement vehicle.
Ask about a pro-rata refund and whether a cancellation fee applies. If you are mid-policy with no claims, transferring rather than cancelling usually protects your no claims discount better.

## Step five: file the Certificate of Destruction

Your Certificate of Destruction is issued by the authorised treatment facility, normally within a few days. It is your proof the vehicle was legally destroyed and can no longer be reused on the road.
Keep it with the DVLA acknowledgement. Between them they close out every liability attached to the vehicle.
