# Car breakers, scrap yards and ATFs: what is the difference?

Search for somewhere to get rid of a car and you will be offered breakers, scrap yards, salvage dealers, dismantlers and recyclers. The distinction that actually matters legally is whether the site holds an authorised treatment facility licence.

## Car breakers and dismantlers

A breaker strips usable parts, tests them and sells them on: engines, gearboxes, body panels, lights, alternators. If you are buying a part for an older car this is where it comes from, and it is why a mechanically sound car that failed on rust is worth more than a shell.
Breaking a car is not, by itself, the same as legally destroying it. The paperwork depends on the licence the site holds.

## Scrap metal yards

A metal yard buys material by weight: steel, aluminium, copper, brass. Some accept vehicles, many do not, and those that do may not be licensed for depollution.
Under the Scrap Metal Dealers Act it is illegal to pay cash for scrap metal, including vehicles. Any yard offering you notes for a car is not operating legally, and you have no proof of disposal.

## Authorised treatment facilities

An ATF is licensed by SEPA in Scotland to remove fuel, oil, coolant, brake fluid, batteries, airbags and tyres before the shell is processed. It is the only category permitted to notify the DVLA of destruction and issue a Certificate of Destruction.
If a buyer cannot tell you their ATF status, the vehicle stays your legal responsibility, along with anything later done with the registration.

## Which do you actually want?

You want the whole car gone, paid for and off your record: an ATF with free collection.
You want maximum value from a car with strong reusable parts: a breaker will factor that into the offer, and a good ATF is often also a breaker.
You are selling loose metal or a shell you have already stripped: a metal yard, by weight, bank transfer only.
