# Car scrappage schemes in Scotland: what is actually available

> There is no national government car scrappage scheme in the UK today. What exists in Scotland is manufacturer trade-in allowances on new cars, occasional low emission zone support for households and businesses, and the open market value an authorised treatment facility pays for the vehicle itself.

Scrappage still means the 2009 government scheme to a lot of people, when £2,000 came off a new car for anything over ten years old. That ended in 2010 and has never returned nationally.

## Manufacturer trade-in offers

Several manufacturers run their own scrappage-style promotions, typically a fixed allowance against a new or nearly new car when you trade in something old.
Read what the allowance replaces. It is often instead of, not on top of, the discount you would have negotiated anyway, and the old car is usually worth more sold to an ATF separately. Compare the two routes before signing.

## Low emission zone support

Scotland's LEZs in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Dundee and Aberdeen are enforced, and support funding for households and small businesses to dispose of non-compliant vehicles has run in phases through Energy Saving Trust rather than continuously.
Check current availability before assuming it applies to you, and note that a car being non-compliant does not reduce its scrap value.

## What your car is worth without any scheme

A complete vehicle collected by an ATF has a market value based on weight and reusable parts, paid to you by bank transfer with no fees. For most older cars that is a straightforward few hundred pounds, and it is available today rather than conditional on buying something else.

## How to decide

If you are buying a new car anyway, get the dealer's best price without the trade-in, then get a scrap quote, and compare that combined figure to the scrappage offer.
If you are not buying anything, a scrappage scheme is irrelevant and a straight scrap quote is the whole answer.

## Key takeaways

- No national government scrappage scheme currently exists.
- Manufacturer offers often replace the discount you would have got anyway.
- LEZ support funding runs in phases, check before relying on it.
- Compare dealer best price plus scrap value against any scrappage deal.
