Scrapping a car is a five-minute job for you and a legal process for the people collecting it. Done properly, you get paid by bank transfer, the DVLA is told the vehicle is off the road, and you receive a Certificate of Destruction proving it.
Done badly, you can end up with the car still registered in your name months later, parking fines arriving for a vehicle you no longer have, and no proof it was ever destroyed. This guide is the process in order, with the one step that matters most flagged clearly.

## Step 1: Check the car is actually ready to scrap

Before anything else, decide the car really is at end of life rather than worth more sold or repaired. As a rule of thumb, if the repair estimate is close to or above what the car would sell for fixed, scrapping is usually the right call.
Remove everything personal: paperwork, sunglasses, tools, child seats, house keys on the ring, and the contents of the boot. Check under the seats. Once the car is loaded and gone, recovering items is difficult.
If there is outstanding finance on the car, it is not legally yours to scrap. Settle the finance first.

## Step 2: Get a genuine quote

Only deal with an authorised treatment facility (ATF) or a collector working with one. An ATF is licensed by SEPA in Scotland to depollute and process end-of-life vehicles, and only an ATF can issue a Certificate of Destruction.
A real quote is based on the registration, make, model, condition, whether it runs, and your postcode. Be accurate about condition: a price quoted for a complete car will not stand if the engine or wheels are missing when the truck arrives.
The quote should be free, the collection should be free, and payment should be by bank transfer. Cash payment for a scrap car has been illegal in Scotland since 2013 under the Air Weapons and Licensing (Scotland) Act, so anyone offering cash is operating outside the law and so would you be.

## Step 3: Agree collection and prepare the car

Collection is normally arranged within a day or two, and the vehicle does not need to run, have an MOT, or be taxed. Non-runners, accident damaged cars and MOT failures are collected every day.
Have ready: the V5C log book if you have it, photo ID, and the bank details you want payment sent to. If the car is parked somewhere awkward, on a drive with no access or with flat tyres, mention it when booking so the right vehicle is sent.
No V5C is not a blocker. You can still scrap the car with photo ID and proof of address, and you then notify the DVLA yourself in writing with the vehicle registration, make and model, the date, and the name and address of the facility that took it.

## Step 4: Collection day and payment

On arrival, the driver checks the vehicle matches what was quoted. If it does, the price stands. The vehicle is loaded, and payment is made by bank transfer, normally same day or next working day.
You should be given a receipt or written confirmation of the collection on the spot. Keep it with the date and the collector's details until your Certificate of Destruction arrives.
If a collector tries to renegotiate the price on the doorstep for reasons that were clear in the quote, you are entitled to refuse and walk away. It costs you nothing to get another quote.

## Step 5: DVLA notification and the Certificate of Destruction

This is the step that protects you. When an ATF destroys the vehicle, it notifies the DVLA and issues a Certificate of Destruction (CoD). This is your legal proof the car no longer exists and ends your responsibility for it.
If you have the V5C, fill in the section for selling or transferring to a motor trader or dismantler (section 9 on older V5Cs, section 4 on the newer style) and send it to the DVLA, or confirm the ATF has done it electronically.
Keep the CoD forever. If any fine, tax demand or query about the car ever appears after this point, the certificate ends the conversation.

## Step 6: Cancel tax and insurance, claim refunds

Once the DVLA records the car as scrapped, any full months of remaining vehicle tax are refunded automatically by cheque to the registered keeper's address. You do not need to apply, but make sure your V5C address is current.
Cancel your insurance yourself; it does not stop automatically. If you paid annually you will normally get a pro-rata refund, minus any admin fee.
Private number plates must be retained on a V778 or transferred to another vehicle BEFORE the car is scrapped. Once a Certificate of Destruction is issued, the registration is gone with the car.

## How long the whole thing takes

For most people in Scotland the timeline is: quote today, collection within 24 to 72 hours, payment the same day or next working day, CoD within days of the vehicle being processed, and the tax refund following from the DVLA.
The entire active effort from you is about fifteen minutes: one quote form, one phone call, and handing over the keys.

## The mistakes that cause problems later

The three issues we see most: accepting cash (illegal, and leaves you with no paper trail), handing the car over without any receipt, and never confirming the DVLA was notified so the car stays in your name.
If weeks pass with no Certificate of Destruction, chase the collector and check the vehicle's status with the DVLA. A legitimate ATF will resolve it quickly because the certificate is part of their licence to operate.

## Key takeaways

- Use an authorised treatment facility; only an ATF can issue a Certificate of Destruction.
- Collection is free, the vehicle does not need to run, and payment is by bank transfer, never cash.
- No V5C is fine: photo ID and proof of address, then notify the DVLA in writing yourself.
- Retain a private plate before scrapping; it cannot be recovered afterwards.
- The Certificate of Destruction is the document that ends your responsibility. Keep it.
