Glasgow was first, but Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Dundee now enforce their own Low Emission Zones in the city centre. The effect on an older diesel is the same in each: drive in and you get charged.
The question for most owners is not how to avoid the zone, it is whether an older non-compliant car is still worth keeping at all.

## Which vehicles are non-compliant

The standards are emissions based, not age based, but as a rough guide: petrol cars registered before roughly 2006 and diesel cars registered before roughly September 2015 are usually caught.
Check your own vehicle rather than guessing. The national LEZ vehicle checker takes a registration and gives a definitive answer, and the Euro standard is also often listed on the V5C.
Motorcycles and mopeds are exempt, as are blue badge holders and emergency vehicles. Being exempt from the charge does not make an old diesel any more valuable.

## What it costs to ignore

The penalty charge for a non-compliant vehicle entering a zone starts at a fixed amount and doubles for each subsequent breach within the same 90-day period, up to a capped ceiling. Repeat offending gets expensive very quickly.
There is no daily-charge option as there is with some English clean air zones. In Scotland a non-compliant vehicle simply should not enter, and every entry is a penalty.

## Retrofitting is rarely the answer for a car

Retrofit systems exist for buses, HGVs and some vans, and are certified through a recognised accreditation scheme. For a private car there is generally no approved retrofit route, so a non-compliant car stays non-compliant.
That leaves three real options: keep it and never drive into the zone, sell it to someone outside the cities, or scrap it.

## When scrapping is the rational choice

Do the arithmetic. If the car is non-compliant, over ten years old, facing an MOT with known advisories, and you live or work inside or near a zone, the running cost of keeping it is rarely justified by what it is worth to sell.
Second-hand demand for older diesels in the Central Belt and the three LEZ cities has fallen precisely because of the zones. A private buyer in Edinburgh or Aberdeen has the same problem you do, which is why these cars sit unsold for months.

## What we pay for a non-compliant car

The LEZ status makes no difference to a scrap quote. We price on weight, parts and condition, so an older diesel with an intact catalytic converter or particulate filter is often worth more than its owner expects.
Collection is free from Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Dundee, Glasgow and everywhere in between, the car does not need to run or be taxed, and payment is by bank transfer on the day.

## Before you scrap it

Retain a private plate first if the car has one. Cancel the insurance after collection rather than before, keep the Certificate of Destruction, and expect the remaining vehicle tax to be refunded automatically.

## Key takeaways

- Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Dundee enforce LEZs alongside Glasgow.
- Roughly: pre-2006 petrol and pre-September-2015 diesel cars are usually non-compliant.
- Penalties double with each repeat breach in a 90-day period; there is no daily-charge option.
- There is generally no approved retrofit route for a private car.
- LEZ status does not reduce a scrap quote; value still comes from weight, parts and condition.
