# Scrapping a vehicle after the owner has died

Clearing a family member's estate is a difficult time to be dealing with paperwork. The vehicle part is one of the simpler items, and it can usually be handled in a single phone call and one collection.

## Who can authorise the disposal

The executor named in the will, the administrator appointed where there is no will, or the next of kin handling the estate informally where the estate is small.
You do not need to transfer the vehicle into your own name first in order to scrap it. Transferring adds a step and a delay without changing the outcome.

## Telling the DVLA

The DVLA needs to know the registered keeper has died so the record is updated and any tax direct debit is stopped. In Scotland this can be handled through the Tell Us Once service the registrar offers when the death is registered, which notifies several government departments at the same time.
If Tell Us Once was not used, write to the DVLA with the vehicle details and a copy of the death certificate.

## What to do about the V5C

If you have the V5C, keep it and hand the yellow section to the driver at collection, exactly as a normal scrapping.
If the document cannot be found, that is common and not a barrier. We can still collect. You may be asked for the registration, your relationship to the deceased and confirmation that you are dealing with the estate.

## Practical points on the day

Check the car thoroughly before collection. Personal items, documents, photographs and small valuables turn up in gloveboxes and boots more often than you would expect, and nothing can be recovered once the vehicle is processed.
