answer: "To sell a damaged car, match the route to the damage. Light cosmetic damage on a good car: private sale or trade. Repairable but uneconomic damage (often Category S or N): a salvage buyer who values the parts. Severe, structural, fire or flood damage, or Category A or B: scrap at a licensed ATF. Scrap A Car Scotland collects damaged cars free across Scotland and pays by bank transfer on the day of collection."

Damage does not make a car worthless. It changes who wants it. A dented wing barely matters to a private buyer, while a bent chassis turns the same car into parts and metal.
Be honest with yourself about which group your car falls into before you start getting quotes.

## Light damage: sell it as a car

Scuffs, dents and a cracked bumper on a car that drives, has a decent MOT and no warning lights are a negotiating point, not a deal breaker. A private sale or a trade buyer will usually beat scrap value, as long as you describe the damage plainly and price it in.

## Repairable but not worth repairing: salvage

If the repair bill is more than the car is worth, an insurer will often write it off as Category S (structural) or Category N (non-structural). These cars can legally go back on the road after repair, so salvage buyers and repairers pay for them based on the parts and the repair margin.
If you keep a written-off car, the insurer deducts its salvage value from your payout. Compare that deduction with what a salvage or scrap buyer would pay you before deciding to keep it.

## Severe damage: scrap it

Fire, flood, a heavily corroded or bent shell, or a Category A or B write-off mean the car must not return to the road. Category A must be crushed entirely, and Category B can only have parts salvaged before the shell is destroyed.
These cars are priced mainly on weight and reusable parts. A damaged car with an intact catalytic converter, engine or gearbox can be worth noticeably more than its owner expects.

## How to get an accurate quote for a damaged car

Describe the damage, whether it runs, whether the airbags have deployed and what is missing. Photos help. An honest description means the price holds when the driver arrives, and our quote is the figure paid with no deductions on the driveway for damage you told us about.
Tell us how the car is parked. A non-runner with flat tyres or a damaged wheel can still be collected, but we send the right vehicle for it.

## Common questions

Can I sell a car the insurer has written off? If it is Category S or N and you have retained it, yes, but you must declare the category. Category A and B cars cannot go back on the road.
Do I need the V5C? It makes things simpler, but we can scrap a car without one with proof of ownership and ID.
Will you collect a car that does not move? Yes, free, across our Scottish coverage area.

## Key takeaways

- Light damage on a good car: sell it as a car.
- Uneconomic repair, usually Cat S or N: salvage value.
- Severe damage or Cat A and B: scrap at a licensed ATF.
- Describe the damage honestly so the quote holds on the day.
