answer: "Scrap car quotes differ because buyers use different scrap metal contracts, some collect with their own fleet while others subcontract, and some quote high to secure the booking then reduce the price on collection. Always confirm whether the quote includes free collection, has no admin fee, and is guaranteed rather than subject to inspection."

It is normal to ring three buyers and get three prices with a hundred pounds between them. Some of that spread is legitimate. Some of it is a sales tactic, and knowing the difference saves an unpleasant conversation on the driveway.

## Legitimate reasons the price varies

Different treatment facilities have different contracts with the mills that buy their processed steel, and those contracts are renegotiated at different times. A buyer on last month's rate can genuinely offer more or less than one on this month's.
Location matters too. A buyer with a depot forty miles from you has a shorter run than one routing a subcontractor across the country, and that difference lands in the quote.
Parts demand is the third factor. A buyer who has a customer waiting for your exact engine can pay more than one who will simply shred the car.

## The deductions to watch for

Admin or paperwork fees taken from the agreed price. Collection charges introduced once the driver arrives. A re-quote on the grounds that a wheel is missing, the car has more rust than described, or the catalytic converter has been removed.
Some of those are fair if the car genuinely is not as described. The warning sign is a buyer who quotes noticeably above everyone else, then finds a reason to come down to roughly the market price once your car is already on the truck.

## Subcontracted collection changes everything

Many national scrap websites are lead brokers. They take your details, sell the job to a local operator, and take a cut. The operator who turns up has to make their margin out of whatever is left, which is often where the renegotiation starts.
We collect with our own trucks and drivers, so the person who quotes you and the person who pays you work for the same business.

## Questions that expose a soft quote

Is this price guaranteed subject only to the car being as I described it. Who is collecting, you or a third party. Is payment made before the car leaves. Will I get a Certificate of Destruction from your own licence.
Straight answers to those four questions are worth more than twenty pounds on the headline figure.

## Key takeaways

- Some price variation is genuine: metal contracts, distance and parts demand.
- Suspiciously high quotes are often reduced at collection.
- Broker sites subcontract, which creates room for renegotiation.
- Guaranteed price, own fleet, payment before departure, Certificate of Destruction.
