The price we quote is the price you get

The complaint we hear most about the trade is the kerbside cut: a big number over the phone, then a lower one once the car is already on the ramp and the owner has taken a day off work. We quote from what you tell us, and the figure only moves if the vehicle turns out to be materially different from the description, for example the engine, gearbox or catalytic converter is missing when the quote assumed they were there. If that happens the driver tells you before anything is loaded and you are free to say no. There is no charge for the visit.

Payment is by bank transfer on the same day as collection and may arrive after the driver has left. We do not pay cash, because cash for scrap has been illegal in the UK since the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013 and any yard offering it is telling you something about how it runs the rest of its business.

There are no admin fees, no collection charges, and nothing deducted for the DVLA paperwork. What we agree is what reaches your account.

What happens to your car at Thornton

Every vehicle we buy comes back to our own facility in Fife. It is depolluted first: fuel, oil, coolant, brake fluid, screenwash and refrigerant gas are drained and stored for licensed disposal, the battery is removed, and airbags and pyrotechnics are made safe. Tyres come off for separate recycling.

Reusable parts are recovered where they have life left in them, and the remaining shell is baled and sent for metal recycling. Around 95% of an average car is recovered as material or reused components rather than sent to landfill.

High-voltage packs from hybrids and electric vehicles go through the correct handling route, which is why we can take EVs when some yards still will not.

We are registered with SEPA and the local authority to carry out this work, and all waste materials are disposed of responsibly. The paperwork trail exists precisely so you can prove the car is gone.
