Failed Your MOT? Your Options and When Scrapping Wins
Some failures are a morning's work. Others end the car. Here is how to tell which one you have.
If your car has failed its MOT in Scotland, you have three options: repair it, sell it as a non-runner, or scrap it. Scrap A Car Scotland collects MOT failures free of charge anywhere in Scotland and pays 130 to 400 GBP by bank transfer on the day of collection. As a rule, if the repair bill is more than the car is worth with a fresh MOT, scrapping is the better outcome.

An MOT failure is not automatically the end of a car, but it is the point at which most people find out what their vehicle is actually worth. The useful question is not 'can it be fixed' - almost anything can - but 'does the repair earn its money back'.
Failures usually worth repairing
These are consumable or bolt-on items with predictable costs. If the rest of the car is sound, fix them.

Failures that usually end the car
These are structural or high-value repairs where the bill routinely exceeds the value of an older vehicle.

- A cracked or distorted subframe or chassis leg
- A failed catalytic converter or DPF on an older diesel
- Head gasket or turbo failure discovered at the same time

Doing the sums honestly
Add the repair quote to twelve months of tax and insurance. Compare that against what the car would sell for with a fresh MOT - not what you paid for it, and not what you hope it is worth.
If the repair costs more than the car will be worth afterwards, you are funding a vehicle that will present the same decision again next year. Scrapping puts money back instead of taking it, closes the DVLA record and cancels the insurance and tax liability.
You can still drive to a pre-booked repair
A vehicle that has failed its MOT may only be driven to a pre-arranged repair or test appointment, and only if it is roadworthy. If it failed on something dangerous, it must not be driven at all - which is a good reason to have it collected rather than moved.

- Do you pay less for a car that has failed its MOT?
- No. We buy end-of-life vehicles on weight and reusable parts, so MOT status makes no difference to the quote.
- Can I drive my car after it has failed the MOT?
- Only to a pre-booked repair or retest, and only if the vehicle is roadworthy. If it failed on a dangerous defect it must not be driven at all.
- Is corrosion always a write-off?
- Not always, but corrosion in a prescribed structural area needs proper welded repair by a competent workshop, and on an older car that bill regularly exceeds the vehicle's value.
- My car failed and the MOT has now expired. Can you still collect it?
- Yes. No MOT and no tax are completely normal for the vehicles we collect. We bring the transporter, so it never needs to be driven.
- Should I get a second opinion before scrapping?
- For a borderline structural failure, yes - a second quote costs nothing. For a clearly terminal repair on an older car, it usually just delays the same decision.
- Is it worth repairing an MOT failure instead of scrapping it?
- Compare the repair quote with the car's realistic retail value plus what we would pay you today. Once welding, emissions or suspension work exceeds the car's value, scrapping is normally the better outcome.
- Can I still drive the car to you after it failed?
- Do not risk it. Driving a vehicle with dangerous defects or no valid MOT is an offence, and our collection is free anyway, so let the transporter come to you.
- Do you buy cars that failed on structural corrosion?
- Yes. Rot and structural failure are among the most common reasons cars come to us, and they do not stop us paying on weight and recoverable parts.
