Certificate of Destruction (CoD) - What It Is and Why It Matters
The document that ends your legal responsibility for a vehicle - issued free with every collection.
A Certificate of Destruction (CoD) is the DVLA-recognised document proving a vehicle has been permanently destroyed at an Authorised Treatment Facility. Only an ATF can issue one, and Scrap A Car Scotland is SEPA licensed, so every vehicle it scraps gets a CoD at no cost. Once the CoD is issued the DVLA record is closed and all tax, insurance and penalty liability ends.

The Certificate of Destruction is the most important piece of paper in the whole process, and the one most people have never heard of until something goes wrong months later.
What a CoD actually proves
It confirms the vehicle was destroyed at an Authorised Treatment Facility and its record has been closed with the DVLA. From that moment the car cannot legally be driven, taxed, insured or sold on, and you stop being the registered keeper.
That is your protection against everything that can otherwise follow a car you thought was gone: parking charge notices, speeding penalties, fly-tipping fines and continuous insurance enforcement letters.
Who is allowed to issue one
Only a SEPA licensed Authorised Treatment Facility can issue a CoD in Scotland. A man with a trailer and an envelope of cash cannot, whatever he tells you.

When you should receive it
The ATF has seven days from destruction to notify the DVLA, and the certificate is normally issued electronically inside that window. You should also get a separate DVLA acknowledgement letter confirming the record is closed. If nothing has arrived after four weeks, chase it.
What to do on collection day
Hand over the full V5C log book and keep the yellow V5C/3 section for your own records. Check the paperwork names a licensed ATF and lists your registration correctly. Photograph the car on the transporter alongside the collection note - it takes ten seconds and settles any dispute.
What happens if you scrap without one
The DVLA still shows you as the keeper. Any fine, charge or offence attached to that registration comes to your address, and you carry the burden of proving the car was gone. Vehicles taken without paperwork also turn up fly-tipped, at which point the local authority traces the last registered keeper - you.

- How long does a Certificate of Destruction take?
- The ATF must notify the DVLA within seven days of destruction, and the certificate is typically issued electronically in that window. Chase it if you have heard nothing after four weeks.
- Can I get a CoD if I have lost the V5C?
- Yes. The certificate is issued by the treatment facility, not the DVLA record you hold. Bring whatever proof of ownership you have and write to the DVLA separately to confirm the vehicle has been scrapped.
- Does a CoD mean I get my road tax refunded?
- Once the DVLA record is closed, any full remaining months of tax are refunded automatically and the direct debit is cancelled.
- Can a car with a CoD ever be put back on the road?
- No. A CoD is final - the vehicle identity is destroyed with the car. That is what separates it from a salvage or write-off category that can be repaired.
- How long does the Certificate of Destruction take to arrive?
- The DVLA notification goes in the same day the vehicle is processed, and the certificate is normally issued within a few working days. You will also get written confirmation from the DVLA.
- What should I do if I lose my Certificate of Destruction?
- Call us with the registration and collection date and we will reissue a copy from our Authorised Treatment Facility records. The DVLA record of destruction is permanent regardless.
- Does a Certificate of Destruction cancel my insurance?
- No. It ends your DVLA liability for the vehicle, but you still need to contact your insurer yourself to cancel the policy and claim any refund.
