What it actually proves
A CoD confirms the vehicle was destroyed at an Authorised Treatment Facility and its record has been closed with the DVLA. From that point the car cannot legally be driven, taxed, insured or sold on, and you are no longer the responsible keeper.
It is your protection against everything that can otherwise follow a car you thought was gone: parking charges, speeding notices, fly-tipping penalties and continuous insurance enforcement letters.
Who can issue one

When you should expect it
The ATF has seven days from destruction to notify the DVLA, and the certificate is typically issued electronically within that window. You should also receive a DVLA acknowledgement letter confirming the record is closed. Chase it if nothing has arrived after four weeks.

Remove the number plates only if the collector asks you to, hand over the V5C log book, and keep the yellow section (V5C/3) for your own records. Take a photograph of the vehicle on the transporter with the collector's paperwork. It takes ten seconds and settles any dispute later.
