Scrap car collection: how free uplift actually works
SHORT ANSWER
Scrap car collection means a licensed operator sends a transporter to your address, loads the vehicle, pays you by bank transfer and notifies the DVLA. It is free across our coverage area, takes around fifteen minutes on site, and works for non-runners as well as driveable cars.
Collection is the part people worry about most, usually because of access. In practice it is the quickest stage of the whole process.
Booking the slot
Once you accept a quote we agree a date and a window. Central Belt, Fife, Tayside and the Lothians are routine daily runs, so same-day or next-day is common. More remote addresses get a longer window rather than a lower price.
You do not need to take a full day off. The driver calls ahead when he is on the way.
Access, and why we ask about it
Tell us honestly where the car sits: kerbside, driveway, locked car park, tenement back court, farm track, multi-storey. It determines which vehicle we send, not the price.
A non-runner is fine. Winching a car with seized brakes or no wheels is normal work. What causes a wasted visit is a car boxed in by other vehicles or behind a gate nobody can open.
On the day
Have the keys, the V5C if you have it, and photo ID to hand. Strip the car of personal items first, including the boot, glovebox, sun visor and under the seats.
The driver checks the vehicle matches what was described, you hand over the yellow section of the V5C, payment is made by bank transfer while he is with you, and the car is loaded. Fifteen minutes is typical.
Afterwards
The DVLA is notified electronically and your Certificate of Destruction follows, normally within a few working days. Once you have it, cancel the insurance and check that your road tax refund has been issued.
