Scrapping a non-runner: how collection works when the car will not start
SHORT ANSWER
A car that will not start is collected on a recovery truck or transporter with a winch, so it does not need to drive, steer under power or have working brakes. We need clear access to the front or rear of the vehicle, roughly a car length of pulling space, and the wheels able to roll or be skated. There is no extra charge for a non-runner.
Most of the vehicles we collect do not start. It is the normal case, not the exception, and it does not reduce the price or add a fee.
What does matter is access, because a winch needs a straight pull and a transporter needs somewhere to park.
What the recovery vehicle actually needs
A straight line to the front or rear of the car, and about a car length of space to draw it out. The bed tilts, the winch takes the strain, and the car comes up under cable rather than under its own power.
The wheels need to rotate or be capable of being skated. Seized brakes and flat tyres are routine and handled on the day. A car with a wheel missing entirely is worth mentioning when you book so the right truck comes.
No keys, no problem, with one condition
We regularly collect vehicles with no keys at all. The car is winched with the steering lock engaged, which is why the straight pull matters more than usual.
The condition is proof you are entitled to dispose of the vehicle. The V5C in your name is the cleanest evidence. Without keys and without a V5C we will ask a few extra questions before booking.
Awkward locations
Rear courts, shared car parks, farm tracks, garages with a low door, permit-only bays and steep Scottish driveways are all doable, but only if we know in advance. Tell us when you book and we send the vehicle that fits.
Inside a garage is usually fine if there is space to hook a cable and roll the car out. Behind two other cars is not, so please move them before the driver arrives.
Cars that have not moved for years
Long-term stationary vehicles often have sunken tyres, seized brakes and a body settled into gravel or grass. Drivers deal with this constantly using skates and the winch.
Be aware that fluids may have leaked underneath over the years. Mention it if you have seen staining so the driver can bring absorbent and leave the ground clean.
