The DVLA paperwork checklist for scrapping a car

Before collection
Find the V5C log book. If it is lost you can still scrap the car, but tell the collector in advance so the notification is handled differently. Clear the vehicle out completely, including the glovebox, boot, door pockets and under the seats, and remove any toll tag or dashcam.
Cancel nothing yet. Tax and insurance should stay in place until the car is physically gone.
On the day
Hand the full V5C to the collector and keep the yellow V5C/3 slip. Check the paperwork names a licensed ATF and lists the registration correctly, including the mileage if it is recorded.
Straight afterwards
The ATF notifies the DVLA, but you should also see the confirmation. Then cancel your insurance policy and claim any refund, and check that your road tax direct debit has stopped. Any full remaining months of tax are refunded automatically once the DVLA record is updated.
If you have a private registration you want to keep, you must retain or transfer it before the car is scrapped. Once the record is closed the plate is gone.
