How long after scrapping does the DVLA confirm it, and when does the refund arrive?
SHORT ANSWER
The DVLA is normally notified electronically on the day the vehicle is processed, and the Certificate of Destruction follows within about seven working days. The vehicle tax refund is issued automatically once the DVLA record updates and usually arrives as a cheque within four to six weeks. Chase if nothing has arrived after six weeks.
Once the transporter has gone, the rest happens without you. That is exactly why people worry: there is nothing to do and nothing visible happening.
These are realistic timings for a vehicle scrapped in Scotland, and the point at which silence stops being normal.
Collection day: payment
Payment is by bank transfer, same day as collection in almost every case, and next working day if the car is collected late on a Saturday. Cash is illegal for scrap vehicles in Scotland, so nobody should be handing you notes.
You should also get written confirmation of the collection on the day. Keep it until the Certificate of Destruction arrives.
Within a few days: DVLA notification
The authorised treatment facility notifies the DVLA electronically when the vehicle is booked in and destroyed. In practice that is usually within a day or two of collection rather than the moment the truck leaves your street.
You can check the record yourself on the DVLA vehicle enquiry service using the registration. Once it updates, the tax status will show as untaxed and the vehicle as scrapped.
Around seven working days: Certificate of Destruction
The DVLA sends confirmation that the vehicle has been scrapped, and the facility issues the Certificate of Destruction. Expect this within about a week of the vehicle being processed.
Keep it permanently. It is the document that ends your liability for anything the vehicle is ever associated with again.
Four to six weeks: the vehicle tax refund
The DVLA automatically refunds any full remaining months of vehicle tax once the record updates. You do not apply for it.
The refund goes by cheque to the registered keeper at the address on the V5C, which is the single most common reason refunds go astray. If you have moved and not updated the V5C, update it before the car is scrapped, not after.
If you paid by direct debit, it is cancelled automatically and any overpayment is refunded the same way.
What you have to do yourself
Cancel the insurance. It does not stop automatically, and insurers do not learn about the DVLA record. Most will refund the unused portion minus an admin fee.
Retain or transfer a private registration before collection using a V317 or V778. Once the Certificate of Destruction is issued, the plate is gone with the car and cannot be recovered.
When to start chasing
No Certificate of Destruction after two to three weeks: contact the facility that collected the vehicle and check the DVLA record online.
No tax refund after six weeks: contact the DVLA directly with the registration and the date of scrapping. The usual cause is an out-of-date address on the V5C.
Anything arriving in the post about the car after it was scrapped, such as a fine or a tax reminder, is answered with the Certificate of Destruction. Send a copy, never the original.
