Scrapping an electric or hybrid car in Scotland
SHORT ANSWER
Electric and hybrid cars must be scrapped at an authorised treatment facility equipped for high-voltage work. The battery pack is isolated and removed by a qualified technician before the shell is depolluted and processed. The pack itself often carries real value for reuse or recycling, so an end-of-life EV is usually worth more than a petrol car of the same weight.
Scotland's first big wave of electric and plug-in hybrid cars is now old enough to reach end of life, and owners are finding that not every yard will quote on them.
The reason is the high-voltage battery. Handled properly it is straightforward and valuable. Handled by someone without the training or the licence conditions to cover it, it is a serious fire and electrocution risk.
Why an EV cannot go through the normal process unchanged
A traction battery holds several hundred volts even when the car is dead, the key is gone and the 12v system is flat. It cannot be cut, crushed or shredded while it is still in the vehicle.
Before anything else happens, the pack has to be isolated: service disconnect removed, the system proven dead, and the orange high-voltage cabling made safe. That is qualified work, and the facility's licence has to permit it.
What happens to the battery pack
Packs in usable condition are tested and either resold whole, broken into modules for repairs and second-life storage projects, or sent to a specialist recycler who recovers the lithium, nickel, cobalt and copper.
That recovered material is why an end-of-life EV generally beats a petrol car of the same kerb weight, even though the EV has no catalytic converter or exhaust system to sell.
Damaged, flooded or fire-affected battery packs
A pack that has been submerged, crushed or involved in a fire is treated as a thermal-runaway risk. It is quarantined, usually outdoors and away from other vehicles, and handled by a specialist.
If your EV has been in a flood or a significant impact, say so when you book. It changes how the vehicle is transported and where it can be stored, and it is not something a driver should discover on arrival.
Hybrids and plug-in hybrids
A Prius, Yaris hybrid, Auris, Niro, Outlander PHEV or 330e has both a high-voltage pack and a conventional engine and exhaust. In value terms that is the best of both: the pack has recycling value and the catalytic converter is still there.
Hybrid catalytic converters are a known theft target because they carry high precious-metal loadings and are often less corroded, having run cooler. If yours is already gone, tell us when you get the quote.
Collection when the car will not move
Most end-of-life EVs are dead in a driveway with no 12v power, which means no electric parking brake release, no steering unlock and no neutral. Our recovery vehicles are equipped for exactly that, using skates or a winch with dollies where the wheels will not turn.
Do not try to jump the 12v battery to move the car yourself if there is any damage to the orange cabling or the pack. Let the driver deal with it.
The paperwork is the same
An EV is an end-of-life vehicle like any other. The DVLA is notified, a Certificate of Destruction is issued, your remaining vehicle tax is refunded, and you cancel the insurance yourself.
If the car is still on a battery lease or finance agreement, settle that first. A leased pack is not yours to scrap.
